Sierra Leone Armed Forces Condoles With Family of Big Fish, Launches Investigation.

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) have sent their condolence to the family of former local musician, Foday Alieu, also known popularly as “Big Fish,” who was killed by a military officer in Freetown last Thursday.

Previously, Sierraloaded reported about the tragic event in Freetown that led to the death of the well-known musician, leaving another person wounded.

ACP Brima Sandi, the Media Head for the Sierra Leone Police Force, detailed that during the incident, a female police officer was on duty at the United Bank of Africa (UBA). Big Fish entered the bank grounds, overpowered the officer, seizing her gun, and then began firing indiscriminately, with five shots being fired into an open space.

Upon being challenged by the aforementioned military officer, Big Fish shot at him. Fortunately, due to his bulletproof gear, the officer remained unharmed. He had no choice but to retaliate, resulting in Big Fish’s death.

Dr Samura Kamara: A Beacon of Unity Amidst Political Uncertainty

In these tumultuous political times, it is a rare and heartening sight to witness a leader genuinely engaging with the grassroots of society. Today, Dr Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara, the distinguished Leader of the APC, demonstrated not only his close ties with the community of Freetown but also his unwavering commitment to promoting harmony and understanding.

Being invited as the Grand Chief Patron to not one, but two esteemed churches in Freetown is no ordinary honour. It signifies the deep respect and trust the religious community holds for Dr Kamara. This gesture clearly transcends mere ceremonial courtesies, revealing a wider acknowledgment of his inclusive leadership approach — one that does not waver even amidst the current political impasse.

His presence at the Warren Street Methodist Church was not just an observance of the 50th anniversary of their fellowship. It was a bold statement, reflecting his support for the values of religious tolerance, with the admirable women of Sierra Leone leading the charge. Such moments, where political leaders embrace and champion communal and inter-religious ties, are instrumental in stitching together the fabric of our diverse society.

Furthermore, the unveiling of a memorial plaque at St. Patrick Church in Kissy, in honour of Madam Christiana Pratt, a luminary for cohesive communities and religious tolerance, is testament to Dr Samura Kamara's vision for Sierra Leone. Recognising and celebrating stalwarts like Madam Pratt, underscores his deep respect for the efforts of those who work tirelessly to bridge divides and foster unity.

Dr Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara's actions today underscore an essential truth: effective leadership is not just about navigating the high seas of political strategy and diplomacy. It is also about recognising and nurturing the grassroots, the very foundation upon which our nation stands. While others may be distracted by the cacophony of politics, Dr Kamara has kept his eyes firmly on the ball, ensuring that the heartbeats of communities continue to be heard, valued, and celebrated.

In a time when leaders are often scrutinised for being detached or insincere, Dr Samura Kamara shines brightly, reminding us all that genuine leadership is grounded in the service of the people and the promotion of unity, especially when the political landscape appears fractured. Today, he did not merely visit churches; he extended a hand of fellowship, signaling his unyielding commitment to a united Sierra Leone.

Latest from Francis Ben Kaifala

“I went to read Law because of you,Sir”, “you inspired me to want to become a lawyer”. These are exact words from hundreds of young students and lawyers to me. In the classes I teach at Fourah Bay College, over a quarter of the class walks up to me each year to say they went to FBC because of how much they admire me; and can’t believe they are sitting there under my tutelage. Those conversations repeat at parties, beaches, highways and byways, offices and towns, airports and streets. From FBC to Njala, to Unimak, these young people have been coming up to me saying the same thing every time and everywhere. On social media they find a way to reach me expressing how one way or they other they have been inspired to either become lawyers, to enroll at law school or want to enroll and read law. Some hug me and cry. I have to console them and encourage them. Their parents too say it many times they see me in random places. “My son is in love with you, when your face flashes on the TV, even if he is eating he will leave the food”. “My son has refused to cut his hair because of you”. “My daughter can’t stop talking about you”.

This photo was taken on my last day of teaching this year. It was raining heavily but they insisted to take a photo even when it was difficult to squeeze in the veranda outside the class as I left for home. I could see the sadness in their faces when I said I would not be teaching the next year and taking a sabbatical after 16 years of practice and 5 years of teaching at the University. One that touched me was a little girl in my church I had known since she was a toddler. She excitedly told me two years ago that she was now reading law and had been inspired by me. I was happy for her. In my last day in church before departure, she came to me to say she can’t wait to sit in my class next year as she will be going to LLB III now, it was sad feeling for both of us when I looked her in the eyes and said her class would not benefit from my teaching next year. She stood there confused as if saying “I went to FBC for this. What are you telling me?” Another was a boy who came when I was leaving after sharing exam papers to them and said “I come from Makeni. My father was a former minister. You were painted a monster to us, but in your class I found out you are such an amazing human; my favorite lecturer. Thank you”. He hugged me and sobbed hysterically. It was humbling.

But hey, I am a student too now; had some unfinished business with education which I came back for! Nonetheless, they have been in my DM wishing me well, checking on me, expressing their love. Thank all of you past students and lawyers - those I have inspired and touched from afar, and well wishers. I love you all too.

From Supremo

As I depart New York after a week of valuable engagements at UNGA78, I’m confident that the seeds for sustainable economic growth and development in Sierra Leone have been sown through the various strategic bilateral engagements.

From bilateral to diplomatic meetings, one thing was clear: Sierra Leone is set to take its rightful place in the Comity of Nations.

We are also poised to assume membership in the UN Security Council for 2024-2025 to contribute to shaping a more peaceful and prosperous world for all ~ rebuilding trust and promoting global solidarity.

I look to the future with much optimism, knowing that the journey towards fulfilling our promise to improve the quality of life of our people is contained in the BIG 5 Priority National Development Agenda of my Government.

Together, we will build back better.

For the Attention of Former Hon. Abdul Kargbo of APC the Government of Sierra Leone is not sleeping, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority under the Leadership of its Director, Ing. Amara Jambai Kanneh, just did an Assessment on the said Road, and the company has accepted to fixed the Road , you know how Government works, not just overnight and it's fix, they need proper engineering design and cost before the said work commence.
This the report from the Engineers from the Roads Authority
👇👇👇👇👇
UPDATE ON SLRA'S VISIT AT THE FAILED SECTION OF THE LUNGI - PORT LOKO ROAD

A team of engineers from the Sierra Leone Roads Authority, led by the Deputy Director General, Ing. Alfred Jalil Momodu, visited the failed section of the Lungi - Port Loko Road on Friday, August 4, 2023 to, among other things, assess the extent of the failure, verify the cause of the failure and proffer solutions to fix the road.

The SLRA team first visited the operations site of the CTC Mining Company whose vehicles had been widely accused of causing the damage, to verify the claims.

After interviewing the Company representatives and weighing one of the loaded trucks at the site, the team found out that the weights of the vehicles, especially when they were fully loaded with bauxite material, were more than the permissable weights that should ply the route.

Also, during a tour along the Lungi - Port Loko Road, the team dicovered other emerging failures along the road before arriving at the actual failed section that warranted the investigation.

At the end of mission, the management of CTC Mining Company accepted responsibility for the damage and expressed willingness to bare the cost of fixing the road. SLRA will provide a comprehensive assessment report and cost to fix the failed sections of the road.

In the meantime, the CTC engineers are to team up with the SLRA's Port Loko District Engineer to do an emergency remedial maintenance on the severely failed section to prevent further deterioration before the actual maintenance works will be done.
