“New Society; New Reality, New Generation, New Mentality”…Baaba Maal
In this day and internet age, when most young people are busy on social media, well informed about the likes of Lil Wayne, Drake, Carli B, etc, not many African youths may get the chance to listen to artists like Baaba Maal, let alone try to find out what he is saying.
In his song “Generation Nouvelle” (New Generation), Baaba Maal sounded the alarm for a wake up call to the youths of Africa. He sang about the toughness of the upbringings he and his peers endured during yesteryears as compared to the modern day upbringings, but satisfactorily acknowledged the importance and benefits of those difficult days of his childhood.
He went further to appeal to today’s generation to not sit by idling, but rather to stand up and contribute to the security, education, and evolution of their motherland.
In Sierra Leone today, our cultures and traditions are facing extinction in the face of dominance by western and even to some extent, African influences like Nigeria and others.
That is why it is so refreshing to see the work of youth organizations like the Western Area Fullah Youths Association.
With a primary focus to preserve the cultures and traditions of their Fulɓe/Fullah tribe, this organization is by extension giving value and making it cool to be yourself and still remain relevant.
After witnessing their first Cultural Festival held at the Miata Conference Hall few years ago, the chairman of the Monuments and Relics Commission of Sierra Leone, cultural icon Charlie Haffner, not only commended the membership for their work, but also urged other tribes to imitate what the Fullah youths are doing because it helps to strengthen our country’s cultural heritage.
This year’s festival themed “Ko ɗemngal woni wonkii leñol” (Language is the life of a nation) promises to be even more better, with an array of activities lined up, and all other Sierra Leonean tribes invited to display their culture and share in their heritage. It is aimed at highlighting the importance of not only speaking, but also reading and writing our native languages.

*WAFYA PRESENTS NATIONAL FULLAH CULTURAL FESTIVAL SIERRA LEONE*
*In a bid to promote and revive the Fullah culture, the Western Area Fullah Youths Association (WAFYA) is coming up with their Second National Fullah Cultural Festival in Sierra Leone (NFCF-SL) on the 14th November, 2021 at Catco International Hotel Hall, Wilkinson Road, by Freetown Supermarket.*
With the theme: *“KO ƊEMNGAL WONI WONKII LEÑOL,* the festival will display and showcase the beautiful Fullah culture attracting performance, participation and attendance from across the six regions of Sierra Leone and sister countries in West Africa.
This year’s festival features groups from the six regions of Sierra Leone competing for a grand prize and trophy under the following categories- Taali (Storytelling), Poem (Gimol), Picture Identification and, Skit. There will also be the exhibition of cultural items and foods, performance of cultural songs by musicians, guest performances and appearances by other major tribes of Sierra Leone, tributes to national Fullah heroes, and among others.
Culture gives meaning to our interpersonal relationship which is learned and passed from one generation to the other. There is a slow progression in the rate at which culture is passed to the current generation and the next. The overwhelming majority of young people lack comprehensive knowledge about their culture and most are even shy to proclaim or identify themselves with their culture; hence, we are gradually losing our culture. Losing our culture is tantamount to losing our identity. The solution is having this cultural festival to engage young people and revitalize their spirit to learn, embrace, practice and preserve their culture.
You cannot afford to miss out on this grand event. Go and witness the unique Fullah culture on the 14th November 2021 at the Catco International Hotel Hall, by Freetown Supermarket. Many other surprises await you.
