Today marks 19 years since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), a historic day that marked the end of the Second Sudanese Civil War and set the stage for the development of democratic governance and shared oil revenue

The CPA outlined significant provisions, including the withdrawal of northern troops from the south, national elections, power-sharing, and a timetable for a referendum on independence for southern Sudan - which eventually led to the birth of a new nation - South Sudan in 2011.

CPA was signed on January 9, 2005, by the SPLM and the Government of Sudan, the CPA brought hope for a peaceful and prosperous future for our nation.

Murder Alert: Sasolburg Police Services in Free State are looking for Tendai Kugotsi alias Seh Constable (pictured with his victim) who is wanted for the alleged murder of his girlfriend Maivenia Mudenda aged 25 in Sasolburg. It is alleged that Maivenia left her home after being invited by Tendai to come to his house in the same area of Sasolburg on the 26th of Dec 2023. For unknown reasons, it appears Tendai attacked and murdered the defenceless woman on the same night, he then locked the doors and fled to unknown destination. The body of the deceased was discovered in his house 3 days later. Tendai who grew up in Chitungwiza is believed to be on the run. There is a possibility he is in Zimbabwe or still hiding in South Africa. Maivenia is from Cross Dete and her family is appealing for help to find justice for their loving daughter. The leaders of the Ngok community, Dr. Francis Mading Deng and Dr. Luka Biong have reportedly met with General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The meeting was held to discuss the status of Abyei and the steps needed for its full integration into Kordofan.

During the meeting, the two leaders requested that Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo help bring in the RSF to protect the civilians of Abyei. The UNISFA has failed to fulfill this mandate, and Gen. Dagalo has accepted to offer two battalions of RSF for the Abyei region. The meeting concluded with Gen. Dagalo agreeing to bring his forces to Abyei, which is claimed by two countries.

However, this decision could potentially lead to a declaration of war on South Sudan, prompting SSPDF to take action to protect the integrity of its territory and the Abyei region. The presence of the RSF in Abyei could escalate tensions and lead to a repeat of the conflicts that have occurred in 2008 and 2011.

Custom Market reopens amidst tension and protests

After four days of closure and escalating tensions, a section of the Custom Market has finally resumed operations several vendors have confirmed.

The market had been under police control since Friday last week due to a protest by frustrated and dissatisfied street vendors.

The closure of the market had caused significant disruption to the local economy, as both vendors and customers were unable to carry out their daily transactions. The tense atmosphere surrounding the market had also raised concerns about potential conflicts and further unrest.

However, authorities have now managed to reach an agreement with the protesting vendors, leading to the reopening of the market. With the resolution in place, customers can once again access a wide range of goods and services that the market offers.

"While the market has reopened, tensions still linger in the air. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of all market participants," a Juba City Council staff told Talk of Juba

He says efforts are being made to address the concerns raised by the vendors and create a conducive environment for their businesses.

Both vendors and customers are hopeful that the reopening of the market will bring stability and normalcy back to the area. People are now eager to resume their daily routines and regain the economic momentum that was disrupted during the closure.

Joyce a trader says that as the market gradually returns to its usual rhythm, it is crucial for all stakeholders to maintain open lines of communication and work together to prevent any future conflicts. She asserts that creating an inclusive and supportive environment will not only benefit the vendors but also contribute to the overall growth and prosperity of Juba.

"The Custom Market's reopening serves as a reminder of the importance of peaceful dialogue and negotiation in resolving conflicts," says Joyce.
