วันที่ 7 กรกฎาคม 2567 กลุ่ม Future Forest ได้นำฟลายชีท และผ้าใบกันแดดกันฝน ไปมอบให้แก่ผู้พิทักษ์ป่า ณ อุทยานแห่งชาติตาพระยา จังหวัดสระแก้ว ผมหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าสิ่งที่มอบให้วันนี้จะช่วยให้พี่ๆมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น และเป็นประโยชน์ให้กับพี่ๆในการดูแลและพิทักษ์ผืนป่าต่อไปครับ

On the 7th of July 2024, the Future Forest group has donated flysheets and tarp sheets to the forest rangers of Ta Phraya National Park, in Sa Kaeo province. I hope this will improve their quality of life and support them in conserving our forests.

On the 14th of June 2024, the Future Forest group has donated portable water filters, flysheets and tarp sheets to the forest rangers of Namtok Khlong Kaeo National Park, in Trat province. I hope this will improve their quality of life and support them in conserving our forests.

Important record of Telicota bambusae bambusae (Moore, 1878) in Thailand
รายงานสำคัญของผีเสื้อหนอนปาล์มสีเข้มในประเทศไทย

ในประเทศไทย สกุล Telicota Moore, 1881 มี 6 ชนิดที่ได้รับการบันทึกไว้อย่างน่าเชื่อถือจนถึงปัจจุบัน เนื่องจากผีเสื้อในสกุล Telicota ส่วนใหญ่มีลายที่คล้ายกันมาก การจำแนกชนิดจึงยอมรับโดยการตรวจอวัยวะเพศผู้เท่านั้น ในสกุลนี้ ผีเสื้อหนอนปาล์มสีเข้ม (Telicota bambusae) เป็นหนึ่งในชนิดที่มีข้อมูลและรายงานการพบน้อยมากในประเทศไทย อยู่มาวันหนึ่ง ผมพบเจอหนอนสกุล Telicota จำนวนหนึ่งกินต้นไผ่บางชนิดในกรุงเทพฯ มันดูค่อนข้างแปลกและผมก็สงสัยว่ามันอาจเป็นชนิดที่น่าสนใจ ผมจึงเลี้ยงและส่งตัวอย่างเพศผู้เพื่อระบุชนิด และมันก็เป็นผีเสื้อ Telicota bambusae อย่างที่ผมคิดจริงๆ และนี่จึงเป็นอีกหนึ่งรายงานสำคัญและน่าเชื่อถือสำหรับผีเสื้อชนิดนี้ในประเทศไทย ผมเชื่อว่าชนิดนี้อาจหาไม่ยาก แต่เพียงถูกมองข้ามเนื่องจากมีความคล้ายคลึงกับชนิดอื่นๆในกลุ่มเดียวกัน

In Thailand, 6 species of the genus Telicota Moore, 1881 have been reliably recorded so far. As most Telicota species have very similar markings, reliable identification is generally accepted only by examination of the male genitalia. Out of them, the Dark Palm Dart (Telicota bambusae) is one of the most little-known species in Thailand, with very few reliable records. One day however, I found a number of Telicota larvae feeding on some bamboo plants in Bangkok. They seemed quite unusual and I suspected they were something interesting. After rearing them and sending a male specimen for identification, it indeed turned out to be the elusive Telicota bambusae: thus being another important and reliable distributional record for Thailand. I suspect this species may not be as rare as it seems, but simply overlooked due to its close resemblance with other species.

อุทยานแห่งชาติทุ่งแสลงหลวง
คืออุทยานแห่งชาติที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 3 ของประเทศไทย ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ถึง 1,262 ตารางกิโลเมตรของจังหวัดเพชรบูรณ์และพิษณุโลกเลยทีเดียวครับ นอกจากวิวทิวทัศน์อันสวยงามของป่าที่เต็มไปด้วยสัตว์ป่าหลากหลายสายพันธุ์ อุทยานแห่งนี้ยังมีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังของความหลากหลายทางสายพันธุ์ผีเสื้ออีกด้วย เนื่องจากเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของผีเสื้อหายากและผีเสื้อประจำถิ่นหลายชนิดมากๆ และเป็นครั้งแรกของผมที่ได้มาสำรวจที่อุทยานแห่งนี้ แล้วก็ไม่ทำให้ผมรู้สึกผิดหวังเลยครับ นี่คือผีเสื้อส่วนนึงที่ผมได้พบในทริปนี้ครับ

Thung Salaeng Luang National Park is the 3rd largest national park in Thailand, spanning across 1,262 square kilometers in Phetchabun and Phitsanulok provinces. In addition to scenic views and various species of wildlife, this park is famous for its butterfly diversity as well, and is home to a various selection of rare and even endemic species. This is my first time here in the park, and I was definitely not dissapointed! Here are some of the species I found this trip.

On the 12th of August 2023, the Future Forest group has donated 60 portable water filters to the forest rangers of Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, in Phetchabun Province. I hope this will ensure access to clean and safe drinking water for the rangers and support them in conserving our forests.

#วันเจ้าหน้าที่พิทักษ์ป่าโลก2023 #หนึ่งภาพล้านกำลังใจมอบให้เจ้าหน้าที่พิทักษ์ป่า

วันที่ 20 กรกฎาคม 2566 กลุ่ม Future Forest ได้นำเครื่องกรองน้ำแบบพกพา จำนวน 30 เครื่อง ฟลายชีท จำนวน 20 ชิ้น และกระเป๋าเป้ จำนวน 4 ใบ ไปมอบให้แก่พี่ๆผู้พิทักษ์ป่า ณ อุทยานแห่งชาติปางสีดา จังหวัดสระแก้ว โดยมีหัวหน้า ญาณวุฒิ แสงวงศ์ เป็นผู้รับมอบ

นอกจากนี้ ยังมีโอกาสมอบโพสต์การ์ดภาพถ่ายผีเสื้อของผม ให้กับน้องๆนักเรียนที่มาร่วมกิจกรรมกับอุทยานอีกด้วยครับ ผมหวังว่าสิ่งที่มอบในครั้งนี้จะช่วยส่งเสริมให้น้องๆมีความรักต่อธรรมชาติ และปลุกจิตสำนึกให้น้องๆตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของสิ่งแวดล้อมครับ

On the 20th of July 2023, the Future Forest group has donated 30 portable water filters, 20 flysheets and 4 trekking backpacks for the rangers of Pang Sida National Park, in Sa Kaeo Province. I hope this will improve their quality of life and thus encourage them to continue protecting and conserving our forests.

Additionally, I also had the opportunity to give out postcards of my own butterfly photographs to students who were on a school trip in the national park that day. I hope that this will evoke an environmentally-friendly attitude within the students and encourage them to conserve our environment as well.

วันที่ 5 มิถุนายน เป็นวันสิ่งแวดล้อมโลก World Environment Day ซึ่งเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ.1974 จนถึงปัจจุบัน เป็นวันที่ทุกประเทศทั่วโลกร่วมกันทำกิจกรรมในวันนี้เพื่อสร้างความตระหนักให้กับประชาชนในด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมครับ

เนื่องในวันสิ่งแวดล้อมโลก ผมและเพื่อนๆได้มีโอกาสร่วมกิจกรรม “Play La Ploen Bird Journeys” หนึ่งในโครงการ “Ecosystem Camp & Bird Talk” ดูนกและเรียนรู้ระบบนิเวศ ณ อุทยานแห่งแก่งกระจาน จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ครั้งนี้เราได้มีโอกาสส่องนกและศึกษาธรรมชาติในป่าแห่งนี้ รวมไปถึงความสำคัญของป่าและระบบนิเวศต่อมนุษย์ และในครั้งนี้ ผมได้รับโอกาสเป็นวิทยากรเพื่อให้ความรู้เกี่ยวกับผีเสื้อให้แก่ผู้ร่วมกิจกรรมในครั้งนี้ด้วยครับ

Butterflies of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park (Chiang Mai, Thailand)
April 2023

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is located very close to Chiang Mai town (less than 30min drive) and is a haven for many beautiful and uncommon butterflies, hence being a popular destination for butterfly enthusiasts. Here, you can observe a diverse selection of puddling species around waterfalls in lower altitude as well as mountain species “hilltopping” in the higher altitude forests of Doi Pui. Here are a couple species I observed last trip.

On the 29th-30th of April 2023, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Khun Varisorn Rakphan at Chumphon Cabana Resort, where I learnt various things about proper waste management. In addition, I also had the opportunity to do beach cleanup on the shores of the resort.

There are three recorded species of Stichophthalma in Thailand, two of which occur consistently in Kanchanaburi Province, West Thailand, the two being S.louisa and S.godfreyi, and the other, S.cambodia, is only found in Southeast Thailand. Obviously, both were my main targets in my most recent trip in to Kanchanaburi earlier this month, and I was super happy to have managed to photograph both of them!

All three species of Stichophthalma are legally protected in Thailand and are massive, beautiful butterflies that prefer habitats around bamboo forests, frequently seen to feed on rotten fruits, animal f***s, sap, as well as around streams. Eggs are laid in large clusters on bamboo leaves, their larval food plant. All species are very seasonal with only a few generations a year, and are usually abundant around April but may also occur all the way to October.

Stichophthalma louisa is considered the commonest and most widespread out of the three species, and is represented by four subspecies in the country, distributed in all regions. The subspecies here is the nominotypical ssp. louisa, which is smaller and paler in comparison to the other taxons. Stichophthalma godfreyi on the other hand, is much more localized, only being found in West to Peninsular Thailand primarily in Kanchanaburi, Ranong and Phang Nga, and very occasionally in other provinces.

A truly magnificent and bizarre butterfly that is, despite being very common during my trip to Kanchanaburi, a true beauty that is quite fun to shoot. There were many individuals zipping about, assuming territorial perches on leaves and feeding on rotten fruits and damp ground. I managed to get both the underside and upperside of this individual, and they look so different it can be difficult to imagine they are the same butterfly!

The Malayan Oakleaf is one of 5 recorded species of the genus Kallima in Thailand, and is represented by two subspecies, the more widespread and common ssp. limborgii which is shown in this post, and the more localized ssp. amplirufa which is only found in Yala Province, in the extreme south of Thailand. Like other members of its genus, this species displays a very unique form of mimicry, where the undersides of the wing almost completely resemble a dried leaf, complete with the leaf shape, veins, midrib and even speckles resembling fungus on leaves! This makes it very difficult to spot and is perfectly camouflaged in the leaf litter. The upperside however, is a whole different story, being vibrant and attractive blue with a broad orange subapical band, usually deeper coloured than related species such as Kallima inachus, which is may be found sympatrically with this species in a few localities. However, many species of the genus can be very difficult to differentiate on the field and certain identification sometimes requires specimen analysis.

วันนี้ผมได้มีโอกาสพูดคุยกับท่านหัวหน้าและพี่ๆผู้พิทักษ์ป่า และได้รับรู้ถึงปัญหาต่างๆที่เกิดขึ้น ไม่ว่าจะเป็นปัญหาของไฟป่า และภาวะโลกร้อน ผมอยากจะขอบพระคุณและเป็นกำลังใจให้กับพี่ๆผู้พิทักษ์ป่าทุกท่าน และพร้อมที่จะช่วยเหลือต่อไปนะครับ

On the 11th of April 2023, the Future Forest group have donated 20 portable water filters and dried food to the forest rangers of Thong Pha Phum National Park, in Kanchanaburi Province. During the donation I also had the opportunity to talk with the park chief and the forest rangers about ongoing problems such as forest fires and global warming, and I would like to greatly thank all the forest rangers for their dedication in conserving our forests and I hope this donation will benefit and give them encouragement in doing so.

Lost for words…
I am just a simple 14 year-old citizen and nature lover who wants to see a bright future for our country. I would love to see a world where humanity and nature to coexist in a peaceful world in my adulthood, and I truly wish the next generation of children can experience such a paradise as well. I try my best to protect nature and the environment whenever I can, but this… this truly breaks my heart. I find the fact that unfathomable quantities of forested land are being burnt and decimated beyond belief, mind-boggling and truly saddening. Is this really our inevitable future? Does it really have to be like this? Or can we act and restore the magnificent natural world our country and the world deserves?

On the 9th of April 2023, the Future Forest group have donated 20 portable water filters and dried food to the forest rangers of Khao Laem National Park, in Kanchanaburi Province. During the donation, I also had an opportunity to talk about problems associated with forest fires and how we can help. I would like to hugely thank the park chief and all of the forest rangers for their time, and I hope this donation will be beneficial and provide encouragement for the forest rangers as well.

On the 8th of April 2023, the Future Forest group have donated 20 portable water filters and dried food for the forest rangers of Lam Khlong Ngu National Park, in Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province. We hope this will improve the quality of life of the forest rangers, and currently with forest fires being a big problem, we hope this will provide encouragement for them in protecting our forests as well.

The genus Potanthus (Scudder, 1872) is a relatively large genus of ‘Dart’ butterflies or the Taractrocerini, which is part of the Hesperiidae (skippers) family, characterized by their large eyes, stockier bodies and their swift flight. In Thailand, this genus consists of at least 17 species, and can be found throughout the country in a variety of habitats, from urban and agricultural areas to high altitude mountains and coastal forests. Like most other skippers, they are small-sized butterflies, with the larger species reaching wingspans of only 35mm. The caterpillars feed on various monocotyledonous plants, and each species may prefer some plants over others.

From personal experience, the Indian Dart is probably the commonest of the genus in Bangkok, and can be found around suburbs, villages and parks. Females can be seen ovipositing on its host plant. Characteristics include having an average size for the genus, pale orangish-yellow colouration, a prominent spot 6 on the hindwing, forewing spots 4 and 5 with small overlap with spots 3 (which is typically wide) and 6, upperside hindwing veins lightly dark-dusted and strong black edging to the spots. Usually, identification of this genus requires examination of the male genitalia, and this species has been identified by a comparison with another batch of individuals in Chachoengsao province which were bred and analyzed.

The caterpillars are relatively common and frequently found on Cymbopogon citratus, or Lemongrass, a plant commonly grown around gardens. After rearing a few generations of caterpillars, I concluded that there are at least 3 colour forms or morphs of caterpillars (each shown in the post). The caterpillars of this species implements many survival strategies commonly used within the skipper family. One such strategy is constructing a ‘leaf shelter’ which involves pulling each end of the leaf together and attaching them with silk to essentially build a safe home where the caterpillar can rest between meals out of the sight of hungry birds and other predators. Another interesting strategy is that the caterpillar will eject its frass (p**p) very forcefully, so that it ends up meters away from the caterpillar’s location, and prevent predators that track prey from their faeces from locating them. Pupation also occurs within a leaf shelter, albeit more tightly sealed than during the larval stage. The total duration from egg to adult varies, but is usually over a month.

The species (as well as other species of the group) is slightly sexually dimorphic and there are a few differences between the two sexes. The most consistent method for these skippers is generally the abdominal end, which is notched in the female but is brush-tipped in the male. In the case of this species, I also noticed that the female has a longer profile than the male, and the ‘black hole’ on the upperside forewing cell is more prominent in the female.
