Everyone's creative process is totally unique.

For me, it is the same process whether I am DJing or writing or building a business. The same creative energy expressed through different channels.

That is true for everyone. All acts are creative acts to some extent. Your unique personality is the filter, or prism, through which creative energy expresses itself.

Since the start of the year I've noticed a great build-up and reorganization of creative energies.

It is hard to describe. It is something I become aware of internally and intuitively on a level beyond words, yet it is more real and tangible than any experience that can be contained in words.

There have been shifts both internally (changes in self-perception) and externally (record sales months, building new businesses, new creative projects).

Old patterns settling down, making way for new expressions of creative energy. Once certain possibilities have been fulfilled, new possibilities emerge.

As if one circuit of the Rollercoaster of Life has been completed, and its peaks and valleys are now collapsing and rebuilding themselves in preparation for the next go-around.

I don't expect this to make much sense to most people. But I figure there's at least 1 or 2 people that this makes perfect sense to, so I figured I would try to express it for their benefit.

Anyway, in the midst of all this I felt randomly and spontaneously inspired to mix a few songs together. It is in a sense a musical expression of what I have tried to articulate above.

It's also an attempt to demonstrate a range or journeying through emotional intensities, tones and textures in sound, while remaining consistent in tempo (128 BPM) and coherent in soundscape.

Tl;dr: New mix. Hope you like it.

BUBBLE TEA VOL. #5: GROOVE COUTURE

πŸ‘‰ https://soundcloud.com/linusrylander/bubble-tea-5-groove-couture

I've always thought of a DJ mix as a moment captured in time.

Just like a photograph is a moment captured in time, a DJ mix is a reflection of the artist's taste and preference at the time of the recording.

And when you're constantly picking up new music, those tastes and preferences keep changing and evolving over time.

That's why I like to record mixes. First, it allows me to go back to any notable phase I've gone through in my DJ career so far and bring back the vibe I was into at that time.

For example, the selection in this mix has largely been collected since the nightlife scene started opening back up in Bangkok.

During this time, I've worked with Late Night Bangkok to launch Grow Room, as well as our two most successful Disco Diaries events to date. On top of that, many more gigs, many new friends, deepened relationships with old friends, and lots of adventures.

So in maybe a year from now when I listen back to this, I'll remember all the cool s**t we were doing around this time.

Another reason I like recording mixes is that it forces me to THINK about music, a LOT, which in turn makes me a better DJ.

The process goes something like this:

1. I get an idea or a concept in my head. Sometimes I get inspired by a single track. I hear a certain type of sound and my brain starts connecting the dots and I start thinking about what kind of story I could tell using that sound as an anchor.
2. The idea usually starts out extremely vague, and then as I'm digging and collecting music, the mix slowly starts taking shape in my head for an undefined amount of time. (In this case, about 3 months)
3. At some point my selection has reached a point where I feel ready to record it.
4. Repeat.

It's an interesting creative process that's both rewarding and frustrating.

Bubble Tea Vol. #5 has been percolating in my head for about 3 months now, and last Thursday I finally pulled the trigger and decided to record it. I picked an opening track and freestyled it from there.

It has a little bit of everything. From the deep & groovy s**t you know me for, to the more irreverent and playful, alongside a handful of high energy dance floor weapons.

"Groove Couture" is something W***y (Wild Thai) and I came up with in a hotel room while we were winding down from the last Disco Diaries. An unreleased track from the artist DJOKO came on the speaker, which, honestly, is still one of the dopest things I've ever heard.

That's when W***y goes "Yooo that's some couture-level groove, man!"

Looking forward to a very special and long overdue B2B with Kuroten Music for Mustache's 5 Year Anniversary. πŸŽ‰

We always have the most interesting conversations about music that always leave me feeling smarter. We also share a lot of similar thoughts and perspectives on this whole DJing thing, so I can't wait to see what comes out of this!
