Icon of the Seas' backup generator kicked in and power was quickly restored, according to the spokesperson.

PortMiami has begun offering shore power capabilities. This week, the world’s busiest cruise port announced that up to three docked cruise ships can switch to shore-based electricity, helping vessels save fuel while minimizing harmful emissions.

It is the first major cruise port on the US East Coast to provide shore power connections at five cruise berths.

Florida Power and Light built terminals that generate up to 16 megawatts. They’ve been designed to meet the needs of docked vessels that consume 8 to 13 megawatts. That’s a lot of electricity, roughly the daily demand of 10,000 households, but it’s a small percentage compared to the entire city of Miami’s consumption. With over 199,000 households, each ship represents 5% of Miami’s overall utilization.

In an interview with the Miami Herald, PortMiami Director, and CEO Hydi Webb assured the public that supporting the electric needs of cruise vessels won’t compromise the city’s supply. “People outside the port won’t be impacted. We’re not taking away from anyone else,” she said.
Aside from minimizing emissions and the consumption of fossil fuels, shore power availability appeals to environment-conscious consumers. It will also help the port reach its goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50% in 2030

The new Mein Schiff 7 was officially delivered to TUI Cruises today at the Meyer Turku Shipyard in Finland, according to a press release.

The 2,894-guest vessel is the first built by the shipyard with methanol capability, Meyer Turku said in a prepared statement.

At the official signing ceremony, the shipyard was represented by CEO Tim Meyer and Head of Projects Tom Degerman, while TUI Cruises was represented by CEO Wybcke Meier and CFO Frank Kuhlmann.

The Mein Schiff 7 is the seventh ship of the Mein Schiff series built by the shipyard, Meyer Turku highlighted.

“Mein Schiff 7’s symbolic start of production, the steel cutting ceremony, took place at our shipyard on June 14, 2022,” said Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku.

“We are very proud to have delivered the Mein Schiff 7 to TUI Cruises today, less than two years later. This was made possible by our long-standing and close cooperation.”

The Mein Schiff 7 is also the first ship in the Mein Schiff fleet to run exclusively on low-emission marine diesel (with maximum sulfur content of 0.1%).

The 111,500-ton ship has a shore power connection and is equipped with catalytic converters, the shipyard said.

In addition, the Mein Schiff 7 is built so that it can also run on methanol, which with the green methanol of the future, will make the ship’s propulsion power almost CO2-neutral.

“Receiving this ship is a special moment for us. Ten years ago, we acquired our first Blu Motion class ship here in Turku, and by 2019 we had built a total of six vessels,” said Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises.

“We would like to thank the Meyer Turku shipyard for the excellent cooperation and the development of our well-being fleet. We are now sailing on the Mein Schiff 7 to Kiel, where we will welcome the first guests on board on June 12,” she added.

Port Canaveral Pushing Ahead with More Cruise Expansion

Port Canaveral is pushing ahead with a plan to have another cruise facility in place, Cruise Terminal 4, in time for the 2026-27 season.

“It’s going to be different than any other terminal we’ve ever done,” said Captain John Murray, CEO.

“It’s going to be a Port Canaveral terminal as opposed to a terminal dedicated to any particular cruise line.

“The reason for that is that we don’t necessarily get the highest utilization out of a cruise line dominated terminal. If we control it ourselves, we get the highest utilization for that facility.”

Murray said if the terminal existed today, the port could fill it with business immediately.

“We’re at a point where we are turning away business,” he said, “and I don’t like turning away business.

“In the future we’ll be able to accommodate everyone with a new terminal. With six terminals now we’re running pretty tight.”

Terminal designs will be simplified in the future, Murray said, with guests spending less time than ever in the facilities. He also expects new technology developments for cruise line branding opportunities.

“If we have three or four different brands, we can make it their day,” he explained.

Port Canaveral is also adding 3,000 new parking spaces, which will be ready this coming October.

“We will have 16 homeported ships next season, with the addition of two new cruise lines: Princess and Celebrity,” Murray said.

“The reason we’re building 3,000 more spaces is that we’re in a drive-in market,” he continued. “Quite frequently we get a lot of cars from Texas, all the way to the east coast and up to Canada.”

Almost 40 million people will cruise annually by 2027, predicts CLIA

Nearly 40 million people are expected to cruise annually by 2027, according to new statistics published in Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) 2024 State of the Cruise Industry Report.

Figures from the report indicate that the number of travellers choosing a cruise in 2023 totalled 31.7 million, a seven per cent increase from 2019. Cruise travel is also rebounding faster than other forms of international travel according to CLIA, reaching 107 per cent of 2019 levels in 2023. In contrast, overall international tourism arrivals were 12 per cent lower.

The Caribbean, Mediterranean and Europe retained their positions as the world’s three most-visited cruise destinations, welcoming 44.2 per cent, 18.5 per cent and 10.4 per cent of passengers respectively. In total, 12.9 million cruise guests visited the Caribbean – up one million from 2019 – while the Mediterranean welcomed 5.5 million (an increase from 4.4 million in 2019), and European ports hosted three million (a rise from 2.8 million in 2019).

Meanwhile, North America, Europe and Asia remained the three biggest passenger source markets. Both the North America and Europe source markets grew significantly from 2019, increasing 17.5 per cent to hit 18.1 million in the former and rising 6.5 per cent to reach 8.2 million in Europe. However, there was a 37.7 per cent drop in Asia over the same period, with total passenger numbers decreasing from 3.7 million to 2.3 million.

According to the report, there is also “continued demand” for cruise holidays in 2024 and beyond, with 82 per cent of those who have cruised before intending to do so again, and 71 per cent of international travellers considering it for the first time.

Cruises are also a “top choice” for multigenerational travel, says CLIA. More than 30 per cent of family groups on cruises comprise at least two generations, while 28 per cent sail with between three and five generations. Meanwhile, nearly 10 per cent of all cruisers are solo travellers.

Many of CLIA’s cruise line members are expanding their fleets to accommodate this growth. There will be a record 300 ships in the global fleet in 2023, and the total capacity in the global fleet is expected to increase 10 per cent between 2024 and 2028.

CLIA’s report also noted several others key trends, including a 71 per cent surge in passengers travelling on expedition itineraries from 2019 to 2023. This makes expedition and exploration are the fastest-growing sectors of cruise tourism. There has also been an uptick in the popularity of accessible tour excursions, with 45 per cent of passengers opting for them during their most recent cruise.

Carnival Corporation achieves shore power goal seven years ahead of schedule.

Carnival Corporation has surpassed several of its sustainability goals well in advance of its original 2030 target, according to its latest report, Sustainable from Ship to Shore.

The company, which owns nine cruise brands, has released its 14th annual sustainability report which details its environmental initiatives and the ‘meaningful progress’ made in numerous sustainability focus areas.

Carnival Corporation surpassed its shore power goal in 2023, seven years ahead of schedule, with 64 per cent of its fleet now capable of connecting to shore power. This means the company has twice as many ships able to plug into shore power stations across the globe than there are ports equipped to provide shore power. Carnival Corporation has committed to working with port authorities worldwide to increase adoption of the technology.

Carnival Corporation is also four years ahead of schedule when it comes to achieving its goal of decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity by at least 20 per cent by 2030 (compared to 2019). Consequently, it has formally committed to attaining this target by 2026 instead, putting it ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s 2030 carbon intensity reduction timeline. Implementing various climate action initiatives has also enabled Carnival Corporation to cut absolute GHG emissions by 10 per cent, compared to 2011, despite increasing capacity by roughly 30 per cent in the same timeframe.

The company also recorded a 68 per cent reduction in particulate matter emissions (versus the 2015 baseline). This means it has already exceeded its goal to reduce particulate matter emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

Carnival Corporation Sustainability Report 2023
Carnival Corporation

Carnival’s 2023 Sustainability Report highlights numerous initiatives the company is implementing to achieve its environmental goals

Other highlights from the report include a 38 per cent decrease in food waste per person (versus the 2019 baseline), putting Carnival Corporation two percentage points away from its goal of a 40 per cent reduction by 2025. The company has committed to continuing efforts towards halving food waste by 2030.

In addition, the company eliminated 500 million single-use items from the fleet by the end of 2023 compared to 2018. Originally, it aimed to halve the use of these items by 2030 but it surpassed this goal in 2021, nine years early.

By the end of 2023, the company had outfitted 70 per cent of its fleet with advanced waste water treatment systems and aims to have equipped 75 per cent of its vessels with the technology by 2030.

“Thanks to our 160,000 remarkable team members who show up every day with passion and dedication, 2023 was a year of significant accomplishments across the board,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO and chief climate officer for Carnival Corporation. “We demonstrated our continued commitment to leading the way in making cruising more sustainable, marked by amazing progress toward reaching – and in many cases exceeding – our vital 2030 environmental performance targets. Since we're so aggressively tracking towards all our 2030 sustainability goals, we're evaluating new interim targets along our pursuit of net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.”
