What is Laparoscopic Surgery and How it is Performed
What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a type of diagnostic surgical procedure which is used for examining the internal organs in the abdomen region. This surgical procedure is little risk and the least possible invasive one. This surgery is also known as keyhole surgery and diagnostic surgery as well. For the surgical procedure, small sized incisions are made in the region to carry out the same.

To look inside the abdomen and check the internal organ, a specialized instrument is used that is known as a laparoscope. It is a long and thin tube that consists of a high-resolution camera and high-intensity light to allow the surgeon to check inside more clearly. This equipment, i.e. the high-resolution camera is placed at the front of the small tube. During the surgical procedure, small incisions are made, through which the tube is inserted into the abdomen. As the tube is moved through the stomach, the high-resolution camera at the front of the moving tube captures the images inside the abdomen, and the images that are captured by the camera are sent to the video monitor to check the inside of the abdomen.

This surgical procedure is considered to be much safer than open surgery. Open surgery requires a large volume of blood for the patient, whereas this process doesn’t require as such as only small incisions are made for the operation. The doctor is also able to collect samples for biopsy test during this surgical procedure as well.
Why is laparoscopic surgery performed?

In the case of abdominal or pelvic pain, to identify the possible cause of the pain in these regions if other methods are not effective in finding the result, laparoscopic surgery is performed. There are various types of tests available such as ultra sound, CT scan, and MRI, etc. to detect any problems in the abdomen and pelvic area. But if by any chance, these tests do not provide sufficient proofs to diagnose the disease; then only laparoscopy is performed to help to diagnose.

What are some possible side effects of laparoscopy?

There are some disadvantages or side effects of laparoscopy. Some of the possible side effects of laparoscopy are:

Bleeding
Infection
Increasing stomach pain
Fever
Chills
Swelling or drainage at the incision site(s)
Lightheadedness
Shortness of breath
Persistent nausea with vomiting
Inflammation
Complications resulting from general anesthesia
Some more information regarding laparoscopic surgery:

Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery take various Laparoscopic surgery Training courses. There are different types of Laparoscopic surgery training sessions for surgeons; gynecologists will be able to take these courses. These laparoscopic surgeries courses are offered by various kinds of hospitals and also specialized hospitals for laparoscopy, where a doctor will be able to get a fellowship or higher programs on laparoscopy. Not all programs are long in length; some laparoscopic surgery training courses are short in length as well and have got different entry requirements that can vary from one institution to another, which needs to be checked before enrollment to the institution
