The site of Istanbul University was formerly the site of a Byzantine forum, before the Eski (old) Palace was built there after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

When Topkapı Palace was complered in 1459, Mehmed II moved imperial functions there, but the Eski Palace remained in use as the Harem (women's quarters) were there.

The palace was partly destroyed by fire in the early 1500s and the Harem was moved to Topkapı. After restoration, the palace continued to operate as a place of exile for treasonous princes, disgraced concubines and the mothers of deceased sultans.

Eski Palace was finally destroyed due to a large fire in 1687.

The Hagıa Sophıa (Turkish: Aya Sofia) - built on the orders of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, on the site of an earlier church, and completed in 537 CE was the largest chuch ın the world for almost 1000 years.

In 1453, after Mehmet Fatih took Constantiople from the Eastern Roman Emipre, the church was converted to a mosque - the minaret towers were added over the course of the next 450 years. It remained the principal mosque of Istanbul until the construction of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) in 1616.

The mosque was converted to a museum in 1934 and then back to a mosque in 2020. Today, visitors can tour the uppoer levels of the Aya Sofia for a fee and take in the history and wonder of this magnificent structure from a unique vantage point.

While touring, you can see marks in the marble balustrade at the site where the Eastern Roman Emperor sat for church services - the marks having been made by his guards. Although the original Christian iconography has been covered up, there's still plenty to marvel at - and is well worth a visit if you're in Istanbul.

If you fancy good food at reasonable prices and delicious hot and cold drinks (try the frozen drinks - made with fresh fruit) then look no further than Bizim Kahveci.

Located just off from the centre of Hisarönü, this is a local owned cafe offering exceptional service. Look them up when you're next in town!!

Did you know?

Kayaköy, situated in the hills above Fethiye, has been abandoned now for 100 years. However, prior to that the site had been occupied since the time of the ancient Greek kingdoms ruled over these lands.

While most of what remains of the village was built in the 19th century, archaeology has found evidence of more than 2,000 years of settlement on the site.

An exodus of Greek Orthodox inhabitants during and immediately after the First World War meant the towns population greatly reduced. It was finally abandoned after 1923 following the Lausanne settlement treaty, which required all Greek Orthodox citizens living in Turkey to leave.

Now the town is an open air museum, which the public can visit all year round.

Did you know? In Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, we see that the Targaryan dynasty routinely praces sibling marriage. However, this also has precendent in real life.

In some ancient cultures, it was common to marry siblings to each other in order to preserve royal bloodlines. It also stopped powerful noble/aristocratic families from seizing power. The most famous product of such a marriage was Tutankhamun (he went on to marry his own half-sister), who suffered with significant health issues as a result.

The practice eventually stopped - the Romans in particular found it abhorrent, and after Christianity spread through Europe, it was banned.
