Exploring Architectural Design Ideas: Accommodation, Use, and Mass
Following to our previous blog on 21 architectural design concepts, let's dive deeper into three of these ideas.
We will discuss these ideas together since they are all interrelated and related to the overall concept and design purpose in some way.

Accommodation
When working with accommodation design briefs, it's important to have a clear understanding of how the spaces should be connected, separated, or in close proximity to one another. A helpful technique to achieve this is to map out the required floor areas using squares and rectangles. This approach provides a spatial concept where the areas are arranged based on their use, requirements, orientation, views, shelter, public or private access, and more. By organizing your design in this way, you can better visualize the space and ensure that it meets all necessary criteria.

Use
When designing building spaces, it is common to base the arrangement on their category and how a user will move through them. This approach is evident in supermarkets, where fruits and vegetables are typically located at the front of the store. This strategic decision is made to provide a natural and fresh environment, a peaceful oasis for customers to escape their busy days. Similarly, museums and art galleries guide visitors through their spaces to ensure a seamless and engaging experience.
The design of a space can greatly affect how it is used and perceived. By considering the needs and behaviors of the users, designers can create spaces that are functional, comfortable, and enjoyable to be in.
This is particularly important in public spaces, where people come from different backgrounds and have different preferences and expectations. In addition to the physical layout, lighting, colors, materials, and other sensory elements also play a crucial role in shaping the ambiance and mood of a space. By carefully selecting and balancing these elements, designers can create spaces that inspire, educate, entertain, or simply provide a sense of tranquility and well-being. Ultimately, the success of a space design depends on how well it meets the needs and desires of its users, and how effectively it communicates its purpose and identity to them.

Mass
Massing is a powerful tool that architects and designers use to visualize their ideas in three dimensions. It involves creating simple geometric shapes that represent the basic structure of the building, such as walls, floors, and roofs. From there, the massing can be refined and detailed to create a more accurate representation of the final design. This technique is particularly useful in accommodation studies, where the goal is to create a layout that maximizes space utilization and efficiency. By using massing, architects can quickly test different configurations and see how they fit together in 3D space. This allows them to make informed decisions about the design before committing to a more detailed plan. Overall, massing is an essential tool for any architect or designer looking to create effective and efficient accommodation layouts.
In addition to its usefulness in accommodation studies, massing can also be utilized in urban planning. By creating massing models of proposed buildings and developments, architects and planners can assess the impact of new structures on the surrounding environment. This includes analyzing factors such as light and shadow, wind patterns, and the overall visual impact of the building on the surrounding area. Massing can also be used to study the relationship between buildings and the street, ensuring that new developments integrate seamlessly with the existing urban fabric. Overall, massing is a versatile and valuable tool that allows architects and planners to explore and refine their ideas, leading to better-designed spaces and more livable cities.

⚜️Exploring Architectural Design Ideas: Views and Public/Private⚜️
Expanding on our previous topics of 21 architectural design concepts, we will now explore two additional ideas in more detail: Views and Public/Private.

♦️️Views
Maximizing Your Building's Potential Using Site Views can be a powerful tool in shaping your building's design.
Identifying key areas to take advantage of these views is essential, while also considering utilitarian areas that should be set aside.
But what if your site doesn't offer any views? In such cases, internal views must be created as a starting point for building concept.
On the other hand, where views do exist, you can draw site lines out and across your site to create a lattice-like diagram.
This can lead to the grid concept or further exploration.
Finally, consider developing a concept that focuses on how and where the views are revealed, and how your building can open up to them. This will make your building design even more compelling.

♦️️Public/Private
Establishing Areas in Building Design by Conducting a thorough site analysis is crucial to determine the location of public and private spaces.
The building type and context are significant factors to consider when establishing this concept.
In an urban setting, private spaces may require full detachment from their surroundings to create a distinct micro-environment.
Conversely, in rural environments, private spaces may maintain a strong connection to their surroundings while still being separated from public areas.
By establishing this early on, it can become a powerful driving force for your project.

⚜️Exploring Architectural Design ideas: A Focus on Historic, Physical Features, and Form & Volume

As a follow-up to our previous topics on 21 architectural design concepts, let's take a closer look at three main ideas: Historic, Physical Features, and Form & Volume.

💢 Historical
The historical research of your site and its surrounding context can reveal many avenues for exploration. Every site has a unique history and story to tell, which can provide insight into how to modernize past construction techniques or how to master plan a new housing project based on the town's original plan.
By connecting with past influences and methods, you can significantly strengthen your conceptual approach.

💢Physical Features
Physical features typically denote natural or artificial attributes of a site, including water bodies, trees, vegetation, rock formations, manmade structures, and other similar elements.

💢Form & Volume.
Starting with a basic form and volume analysis may be beneficial. This will allow you to experiment with and explore ways to control positive and negative spaces.

⚜️Exploring Architectural Design Ideas: Geography and Vernacular⚜️

Following to our previous topic on 21 architectural design concepts, let's dive deeper into two of these ideas – geography and vernacular.

♦️Geography
Utilizing Site Geography in Building Design
A building's location can inspire a range of design concepts, from how it interacts with the environment around it (shelter / exposure) to its structural approach (cantilevering / subterranean).
Consider elements such as its exposure to the elements, the level of privacy desired (public / private), and how it integrates with the surrounding features (views / features).
For instance, a steep site requires a robust structural plan from the beginning, while a flat site may benefit from addressing its exposure and how the building interacts with its cardinal directions.

♦️Vernacular
It's important to consider the context of a building before undertaking its design. If your location has a distinct vernacular, use it to your advantage by analyzing the site.
During the conceptual development stage, a strong pitched roof typology can serve as a model for adapting and pushing its form forward.
