One of the pioneers of death/doom metal alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride (sometimes known as "the Peaceville Three").

In the beginning, Anathema was a death/doom metal band. Progressively, they've changed their music, today playing atmospheric/progressive rock.

Anathema effectively traded keyboard players with Cradle of Filth in 2000. Martin Powell left his role as Anathema's live keyboardist to join Cradle as a replacement for Les Smith, who then went on to join Anathema first in a touring capacity and later as a permanent member.

Shortly after the release of A Fine Day to Exit, Danny left the band and relocated to Ireland to work with Duncan Patterson in Antimatter. That did not work out and Danny returned to Anathema with a full album's worth of songs which became A Natural Disaster.

Vincent, Danny, and Jamie Cavanagh are brothers; Vincent and Jamie are twins. John and Lee Douglas are brother and sister.

Despite earlier preparations to record a new album, the band announced an indefinite hiatus in September 2020 due to difficulties caused by the pandemic and tour cancellation. In June 2021, Daniel Cavanagh announced a new project called Weather Systems described as a "continuation of the previous band's legacy" and that "so far this is a project by Daniel, but it can expand".

Not to be confused with the mid 1980s anarcho-punk band of the same name, also from UK.

Originally started as a studio project.

John Haughm parted ways with rest of the members in May 2016. After a few days of uncertainty, an official statement was issued declaring Agalloch to be "permanently laid to rest" on May 18th, 2016

Lantlôs is Middle High German and means "homeless" (literally, "without homeland"). Markus Siegenhort (Formerly known as Herbst) chose the name because he feels at home neither in Germany, nor anywhere else.

In 2021 some of the electronic/glitch/dream pop material previously released as the side project Pikhal has been re-released as Lantlôs, merging the project into the main one and removing

Solo project of Neige. As a child, Neige had dreams about a "Fairy Land", "a place with colours, forms and sounds that do not exist here." The music of Alcest is highly influenced by these dream experiences.

The band started out playing black metal with a line-up including Famine.

Starting with 2005's Le Secret EP, Alcest evolved into post-black metal with strong post-rock and shoegaze influences, a completely original style that would have been labeled as blackgaze around mid 2010s and which influenced many well known bands like Lantlôs, Deafheaven and Harakiri for the Sky.

The band's name Alcest doesn't have any meaning; Neige just chose it for its noble ethereal sound and couldn't imagine any other name in its pronunciation ("Al-sest", IPA: [al'sɛst]) to fit better with this music.

Neige has stated multiple times that Alcest is not affiliated in any way with far right ideologies and that all the ambiguos collaborations with bands and musicians from such contexts have been errors he vehemently regreets. In a detailed Instagram post from 2021 he stated that Alcest and himself stand against any form of discrimination, racism, homophobia or transphobia and that the message of Alcest is about love and acceptance.
