Sometimes, the reality of online learning feels like you don't actually know the teacher behind the screen, so I thought I would re-introduce myself.

Hola/Coucou! πŸ‘‹πŸ» My name is Jake Salloum and I'm currently a Spanish & French Tutor for Forms 1-5. I have been teaching Spanish & French at both Lower Secondary and CSEC Level for the past 3 years. This year, I'll be graduating with a BA in Spanish with French & Linguistics from the UWI, St Augustine. From 2019 - 2020, I taught as an English Language Assistant in France at both middle school and high school, and I recently completed a programme teaching English as a Second Language to Venezuelan migrants. Other schools I've taught at include Purple Pine Foundation and APEX Educational Institute.

My goal as a teacher is to make my classes as fun and as enjoyable as possible, so that my students won't feel as if they're going to school twice. Having been through the system, my goal is to create a unique classroom experience taking into consideration each student's individual learning style, strengths and weaknesses. I also believe in the importance of interaction when learning a foreign language, so my class sizes are always kept small or I commit to one-on-one tutoring. Having experience teaching kids, teens and adults has given me the competence to adapt to every situation and adjust my lessons to suit.

I hope with my help, every student would reach their language goals and fall in love with language just as much as I have. Undoubtedly, language and culture are inseparable, so I hope their appreciation for culture will also grow as we break down the language barriers in an increasingly globalized world.

We all know how the story goes..Christopher Columbus sailed past Trinidad on his third voyage in 1498 and named us "Trinidad" πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έβ›΅ the Spanish word for Trinity as he was so fascinated by the three peaks of the Southern Range ⛰️ which reminded him of the Holy Trinity - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

English: Happy Bastille Day! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·
FranΓ§ais: Bonne FΓͺte Nationale/ le Quatorze (14) Julliet!

So time for a quick Q&A to discuss this tremendous holiday!

Q: What is Bastille Day?

A: Bastille Day is celebrated every year in France to commemorate the onset of the French Revolution. On the 14th July 1789, a mob of Parisians stormed the Bastille prison. A bloody battle ensued between them and the prison guards, however the revolutionaries eventually won and captured the prison. By doing so, they freed its political prisoners and seized the military's arms, ammunition and gunpowder.

Q: What lead to this social unrest?

A: Negative public opinion of King Louis XVI's monarchy was increasing due to him continuously raising taxes to pay off debts, increasing food prices (for example bread and salt were becoming basically unaffordable to the masses) and increasing social inequality among the estates (i.e the clergy, the nobility, the bourgeoisie and the peasants).

Q: Why is Bastille Day important?

A: It is important because it marked a turning point in history; a moment in French history in which the public had successfully challenged the aristocracy. It showed that the common people no longer accepted the absolute power of the monarchy. It would lead to further developments in the French Revolution as well as France's transformation into a Republic.

Q: How is Bastille Day typically celebrated?

A: Bastille Day is traditionally celebrated through the hosting of a military parade on the Champs-ElysΓ©e in Paris. In the evening, firework displays can be observed across France. In addition, it is a bank holiday so most businesses are closed across the country. This year's celebrations were a bit more modest due to Covid-19 restrictions, and was dedicated to healthcare and essential workers.

As the French say, "Vive la Bastille!"

Happy Sunday everybody! β˜€οΈ Having Sunday lunch is a tradition close to all of our homes, but did you know that a lot of the names of our foods have actually been influenced by the French language? πŸ½οΈπŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή

Here's a bit of history behind it πŸ˜‰πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ

In 1793, the Spanish general of Trinidad JosΓ© de GΓ‘lvez introduced the Cedula of Population, which opened up Trinidad to immigration by the French. The French were allowed to settle in Trinidad once they were Roman Catholic and pledged allegiance to the Spanish crown. They brought with them the enslaved Africans from their colonies resulting in a huge boom in population. For reference, in 1773 the colonial population of Trinidad was only 1,000 people. By 1797, the population of Trinidad grew to over 18,000 people. The French came from islands like Martinique, Guadeloupe and Dominica. This was a turbulent time in the French Antilles due to the French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution, so many did take up the opportunity to migrate to Trinidad.
πŸ‘₯πŸοΈπŸ‡«πŸ‡·

This pivotal moment in Trinidad's history profoundly influenced our language. The French Creole legacy lived on even after we became a British colony in 1814. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
Enjoy these posters displaying 8 fruits we have in Trinidad whose names have French origins.

Every Friday I will be posting a word or expression to help broaden your vocabulary! Here's a fun one:
"Ser pan comido" is an idiom (un modismo). It literally translates to "To be eaten bread" but as an idiomatic expression, its English equivalent is "to be a piece of cake." Por ejemplo,"Este trabajo es pan comido!" means "This job is a piece of cake!" It means that it is an easy job to do.

Fun Fact Friday: Did you know that Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world? Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people and it is the official language of 20 countries.
