TTCB abandons 2020 cricket season

THE Executive of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board met on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 on the Zoom Teleconferencing App and reached consensus on several aspects of local cricket in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The decisions came after detailed conversations with representatives of the National League, Zones and Affiliates.

The TTCB was also guided in their deliberations by official Government policy as outlined by Prime Minister Dr Keith Christopher Rowley.

Firstly, the TTCB has officially abandoned all cricket competitions under its aegis for the 2020 season as the prohibition on team sports is still in effect under the social distancing regulations imposed by the Government in their phased out plan to remove the lockdown restrictions.

Further, the TTCB announced that because of the incomplete status of all national cricket competitions, there will be no promotions, demotions or play-offs for the 2020 season.

The TTCB was persuaded to make these decisions in the best interest of cricketers, clubs, other stakeholders and the general public in the face of the pandemic.

Also taken into account was the current state of grounds on which matches are played as they are not prepared to host any cricket in the near future even if the Government eases its Covid-19 restrictions on team sports within the near future.

The TTCB has also received the support of the Tobago Cricket Association, the Trinidad and Tobago Women's Cricket Association, the Secondary Schools Cricket League, the Primary Schools Cricket League, and the Trinidad and Tobago Umpires Council.

The TTCB is also calling on all minor cricket leagues, affiliated and not affiliated to the national organization, to immediately abandon their competitions in the best interest of our cricketers, and public health and safety.
