The UWI STA Tourism Society wishes everyone a Happy Republic Day! 🇹🇹

Trinidad and Tobago became a Republic on August 1st, 1976. The event is celebrated as a public holiday on September 24th because this is the date when the first Parliament met under the new Republican Constitution.

Republic [noun]: A state or nation in which the supreme power rests in all the citizens entitled to vote (the electorate), and is exercised by representatives elected, directly or indirectly, by them, and responsible to them.

The Constitution provides for a President who, in the exercise of his/her functions under the Constitution or any other law, acts in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet of ministers, becoming a republic allowed Trinidad and Tobago to have their entire ministry to be locals of Trinidad and Tobago for the first time.

In 1889, the two islands were incorporated into a single political entity which then allowed Trinidad and Tobago to obtain its independence from the British Empire in 1962 and became a republic in 1976.
With assistance from Dr. Rudranath Capildeo who was the leader of The Democratic Labor party as well as Dr. Eric Williams as a premier, both men laid out the foundation for an independent Trinidad and Tobago.

Arianna would like to visit Ljubljana, Slovenia and she is a huge fan of culinary tourism and her favourite dish so far is Mettbrötchen.

Satesh would like to travel to St. Lucia and Mexican/Spanish cuisine are his go to foods!

Leigh Whiteman joins us as our secretary!!
She would like to travel to Amsterdam and likes to journal in her spare time!

Phoebe would like to travel to Luxembourg and a fun fact about her is that her ideal day would start with a cup of coffee and end with Netflix.

Amirah would like to travel to The Azores in Portugal and her fun fact is that she paints her room's walls with murals and doodles!!

She would like to visit Austria and a fun fact about Andesia is that she is able to write with both of her hands!!

Angel Richardson is the second half of our dynamic Event Coordinator duo!!
She would like to visit Iceland and a fun fact about her is that she did competitive swimming and feels most at peace when at the beach or stargazing.

Next on our team is Aneesa Boodoo who is one of our Event Coordinators.
Aneesa would like to travel to Thailand and has read a whopping 30 books within just 2 months!!
