What is a healthy business mind-set & why it is important for success

In my upcoming book "Getting to Go" I share 4 main keys for successful entrepreneurship, one key is about the importance of 'Getting Ready" for the journey and step one begins with you!

In my experience, both as a business owner and a consultant, I’ve been exposed to some healthy practices to develop that successful business mind-set. They are summarised below.

1. Understand why - Know what is driving you and it better not be the money alone! Dig deep and understand the bigger picture this helps to form the foundation and keeps you going when times get rough

2. Understand where - Where you are as a person, I suggest you do a personal SWOT analysis and strategize your growth steps for where you want to be. Is it up-skilling?

3. Put fear in its place - And that's behind you. You have to be ready for taking the step. Start by starting; calculate your risks and go. In business a late decision could be ad detrimental as none at all.

4. Be a goal getter - Results matter and the only way to measure them is to clearly outline them from the beginning. What gets measured gets done.

5. Failure is not the end of the line - Adopt a healthy view of failure, its a great teacher. Choose to see the opportunities and not the impossibilities.

6. Consistency & Confidence is your currency - Develop healthy daily habits, break down goals into action plans, eat well and get rest. Remember successful people understand their worth, and have confidence in their abilities. Put away the thoughts of inadequacy and inability because others can read your lack of confidence. You can do this by identifying exactly what you bring to the table in terms of value, and highlighting those areas where you excel.

1. Planning is critical - Be prepared for anything! Ensure that you have a plan for business continuity and ensure you cover areas such as operations, finance, human resources etc.

5 Pillars of a Successful Business

When establishing any structure a proper foundation and support (pillars) determine the fortitude and life of the structure. In business it’s the same thing. Consider your business as the building you are trying to construct and these nuggets I’m about to share are the pillars you want to engage to ensure its success

1. Prayer – Seek Godly direction for your business idea, the very thought or business idea should be committed to him. Water it with prayer and activate your faith with works. Once your business is legal and righteous, God will honour it. If you don’t already know what your gifting’s are ask him, and consider building your business around your gifts, it makes working fun and engaging. Once it is established continue to cover it in prayer. Here are 2 scriptures to remind you why this pillar is critical Deuteronomy 8:18, Proverbs 16:3.

2. Preparation – There are 2 aspects to this, planning which involves setting your vision and pursuing knowledge. We don’t know everything and we never stop learning so make a deliberate effort to understand yourself and your business environment. You may want to consider beefing up on your skillset to compliment your business or as I advise most clients, engage in personality assessment and personal S.W.O.T. Analysis. It helps you to understand your leadership abilities and can highlight gaps that you can strategize to close. 3. People – Make time for people development. Of course your business is about being successful, financial independence and self-actualization goals but never forget the people factor. Be committed to the development of your employees, partners, suppliers and customers, if you’re still not sure why check Philippians 2:4

4. Perseverance – Endurance is required for the business journey especially if you are starting a small business. Start of on the right foot, ensure you have all that you need for the journey and take it in stride. Celebrate your wins as well as your failures because they are the best teachers. Don’t lose hope; you have to believe in your vision until the end.

5. Professional Assistance – I know, we live in a generation of do-it-yourselfers and maybe you are able to do it all yourself. I’m sure you have heard the saying “A Jack of all trades but master of none” Sometimes we can spread ourselves too thin, suffer burnout and fall short of the desired results. Focus where your strengths are and once you can afford it, outsource to the professionals. A business consultant or coach is also a great idea since they can function as your accountability partner and offer useful advice.
