Interrupt Anxiety with Gratitude.

So I’m Up way past my bedtime doing a phone sweep going through thousands of pics (mostly of teeth) and getting the feels all over again.
I remember when I started this case.. she came in and she said “ I just want the perfect smile!” and went on to list all the things she didn’t like. Along with a cleaning, whitening and chip repairs.. we got started on a new denture that replaced all of upper teeth she lost some time ago.
Great dentures take time and she was committed to allowing my team and I to carry out each step. I also remember the day we delivered her new denture she was so full of excitement and laughter, it lit up the entire office!
If it’s one thing, my patients can rest assured, I will give them my best because they deserve just that.

Imagine a world where women didn’t get to drive, didn’t get to work or go get their hair and nails done just because they wanted to.. our decisions were decided for us not too long ago.
Fast forward to today and we can be ANYTHING we want to be.. engineer, astronaut, athlete, doctor, teacher, beautician, dancer , pilot, musician, race car driver, prime minister or president..
We can now make decisions for ourselves.
I bask in the modern day woman and I give thanks for those who came before.
They walked so we could run and in their honor we must.

To this day ✨🙏🏾

One of my favorite cases to date that I randomly see and makes me smile so hard.
The challenges were obvious.
- front teeth two different colors and both with nerve damage
- front teeth also overlapping making cosmetic options difficult.

After careful planning and communication with my prosthetics lab in Florida we were able to match the shade of 2 crowns (caps) to the rest of his teeth.
The cherry on top was being able to flatten his teeth profile by eliminating the overlap to give that uniform finish.

Seeing him on occasions after this cosmetic procedure and how it boosted his confident really is the winner for me.

Ps. I am hoping this year to get my photography skills top notch but Im grateful to my patients through the years who have allowed me to showcase my abilities by capturing their smiles with my camera phone 🥹

My name is Dr.Blackman.
Dr.BlackMAN.
Naturally some people assume a male but to the surprise of many new patients,I stand 4 ft 11 inches, a small framed youthful looking female dentist.
What did this mean for me as a woman in dentistry?

To give you some brief history

The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery became the world’s first dental school when it opened in Baltimore, MD in 1840.

1890, Ida Gray Nelson Rollins graduated from the University of Michigan College of Dentistry. She was one of just three women in her graduating class, and was the very first African-American woman dentist in the United States. (This was 50 years later)

For me, It meant that my standard of work & professionalism had to rise above any preconceived notion for a female in a once was male dominant profession.

But on the contrary, in a profession known for bad experiences at the hands of mostly old male dentists, being a female brings a new perspective and an upliftment to medical profession.

To my surprise, I have come across patients who are pleased having a young dentist as they believe they are more updated with current technology and less judgemental. We are also known to be more gentle & compassionate during treatment, qualities that that dental patients longed for.

I absolutely love my career and being a woman in dentistry coming up to 10 years is an honor.
