Yim Mau-Kun Studio 冉茂芹畫室

冉茂芹老師今日參加國父紀念館《島嶼．記憶—描繪臺灣50年》的開幕式，特展的初衷為「從典藏藝術品看見臺灣」，共展出72件精湛作品，有多位藝術家早期創作的罕見作品，涵蓋台灣山水、關懷台灣環境、多元族群及反思現實社會等內容。

《島嶼記憶》為國父紀念館「改裝」前的最後一檔特展，而冉茂芹老師的《孫中山》油畫作品也在此展覽再次亮相。活動期間冉老師接受媒體訪問時，表述了2001年著手這幅畫作的來龍去脈。

展覽分為兩大主題：「製作記憶—以藝術書寫的歷史」與「咱的所在—從土地萌芽的人文風景」，透過珍貴的歷史文獻與藝術品，讓大家一同探尋台灣半世紀以來的故事。

聖誕節這天，國父紀念館館長-王蘭生與新聞聯絡人-梁培君，送來了一份《島嶼·記憶 － 描繪臺灣50年》的邀請函，請冉茂芹老師參加典藏特展的開幕典禮。

除了邀請函，小編被一組水墨古樸暈染的優雅盒子吸引了目光，原來~它是國父紀念館與金門酒廠及陶瓷館首次合作的經典紀念高粱酒。

◆ 畫作簡介：
白衣女郎為冉茂芹老師初至台灣不久，在阿波羅畫廊於短短三小時內一氣呵成的寫生畫作。

特別之處，是以炭條於油畫布上作畫。這幅畫瀟灑流暢，將炭條素描的特色發揮到淋漓盡至，獲得畫界長久的掌聲。

《皇冠雜誌》在1987年11月封面刊登了冉茂芹老師的油畫《大學生》，而內頁刊登了這幅素描《白衣少女》。附上雜誌記者採訪冉茂芹老師的文字：「經過我筆下的生命，我希望她留下來。……我只是把對象的美解釋出來。」

《奴安娜》

最早接觸台灣原住民文化是參觀南投的九族文化村。原住民的太平洋民族的特色和美麗吸引我決定到南台灣原住民的居住地作實地采風寫生。

我帶了畫箱畫布，從台北坐火車直奔高雄、屏東。首先，拜訪了屏東師範高業榮教授。高教授詳細為我解說了台灣原住民的情況，並幫我規劃了南台灣寫生路線。他親自開車送我到三地門排灣族村莊，我就開始了南台灣山地之旅，歷時一個月，到屏東、台東、花蓮，停七、八處原住民村落，回到台北後展出於「東之畫廊」。由於是台灣少見的實地寫生油畫人物、風景，而且又是台灣畫家很少觸及的少數民族題材，所以，引起畫壇極大的關注，除趙耀東、張繼正等仍在政府經濟崗位的父親友人前來鼓勵外，台灣的老畫家幾乎都來觀看，成為畫壇盛事。

畫中姑娘是霧台魯凱族，在屏東某醫院作護士，休假回霧台山村，請她著民族服裝當模特兒，畫了三小時才完成。

“Nu'anna“

My earliest exposure to the indigenous culture of Taiwan was a visit to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village in Nantou. The Pacific Islander traits and beauty of the indigenous people persuaded me to make a plein-air painting trip to the indigenous settlements in southern Taiwan.

Carrying my painter's box and canvases, I took the train straight from Taipei to Kaohsiung then Pingtung. My first stop was Professor Gao Yerong at the Pingtung Teachers College. Professor Gao gave me a detailed introduction to the indigenous peoples of Taiwan and helped me come up with a route for my plein-air painting trip in southern Taiwan. After he dropped me off personally at the Paiwan indigenous village in Sandimen, I embarked on my trip through the mountains of southern Taiwan. Over the next month, I visited seven or eight indigenous villages in Pingtung, Taitung and Hualien. Upon my return to Taipei I held an exhibition at the East Gallery. Plein-air paintings of people and landscapes were relatively rare in Taiwan and the subject matter was indigenous peoples, a topic that few Taiwanese painters touched upon, so the exhibition attracted great interest in painting circles. In addition to those of my father's friends who were still economics officials—including Chao Yao-tung and Zhang Jizheng who dropped by to offer their encouragement—nearly all of the established painters in Taiwan came to view the exhibition as well, making it a major highlight of the art community.

The girl in the painting came from the Rukai Tribe in Wutai. She was a nurse at a hospital in Pingtung and had come back to the mountain village in Wutai on leave. I asked her to model for me wearing traditional indigenous clothing and the painting took three hours to complete.

《白族姑娘》

那年腰痛未癒，試著直上雲南的西部：香格里拉。撐了幾天不行，只好下山到麗江、大理。麗江人山人海，不敢留，第二天沿蒼山洱海到了大理，這裡清靜、古樸，撐著腰痛多待了幾天。畫了幾張風景，畫了幾張人物速寫，就只有一張油畫人物。

初看，與漢族姑娘無異，再看：仍然是西南民族的情態。對於農村、邊陲的寫生，尤其是人物，我都十分珍惜，因為那種相遇，上帝只給你一次機會！焉能不愛？

“Girl of the Bai Tribe“

Despite nagging back pain, I ventured into the western part of Yunnan—also known as Shangri La. After a few days, I had to give up and come back down to Lijiang and Dali. There were too many people in Lijiang so I followed Cangshan-Erhai to Dali the following day. This was a quiet place steeped in history so I endured my back pain to stay for several days. Here I made several landscapes and portrait drawings but only one oil portrait painting.

She looked at first glance like any other Han girl. On second glance, however, she possessed the qualities of the Southwestern people. I treasure my plein-air paintings, and portrait paintings in particular, from farming villages and frontiers. Heaven only gives you one chance on encounters like this! How can you not love them so?

《苗家姑娘》

此畫畫於吉首。它是湘西土家族、苗族自治州首府。州文化館專去找來本地文工團員担任模特兒，並找美術工作人員來觀摩我的作畫。

我們從常德出發，先到桃源，再沿沅江西行到沅陵、吉首、鳳凰，再到矮寨、張家界、王村、臘爾山。一趙湘西行讓我開了眼界，多了感性的知識。湘西的樸素、美麗讓我感動不已。

“Miao Maiden“

This painting was made in Jib Soud, the capital of the Xiangxi Clans and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. The prefectural cultural museum chose a member of the local cultural arts troupe to be my model and invited other art workers to watch me at work.

We started out from Changde and went first to Taoyuan. From there, we followed the Yuan River west to Yuanling, Jib Soud and Fenghuang, then from there to Aizhai, Zhangjiajie, Wangcun and La’er Mountain. The Xiangi journey opened my eyes and taught me a great deal about sense and sensibility. The simplicity and beauty of Xiangi left me greatly moved.

《邊城老船工》
油畫，53x41 ㎝，1988年，湘西．茶峒

中國近代名作家沈從文先生的代表作《邊城》，取材於三十年代湘西鄰接貴州、四川的小城：茶峒。因此，我決定與香港三位學生在此“安營札寨”。確實，1988年的小城還有許多往日風貌，吊腳樓、石板渡碼頭、青磚拱橋……，都還是舊時模樣。我畫了《茶垌渡口》、《觀河橋》等，還有這幅老船工蔣伯。蔣伯做渡工已到七十八歲，他說他認識沈從文書中所寫的「爺爺」， “爺爺”就在上游兩里處擺渡。

後來，我找旅棧老板三哥，希望他找位道地的茶峒姑娘來作畫，看能否有分“翠翠”的風緻，來了一位姑娘，長髮、紅衣，一身時髦打扮，只是臉上尚有一些稚氣。三哥說，翠翠後來嫁到成都去了，六十年代回來過，還剪了頭髮，不是“披披”頭了。

“Old Boatman“

The Border Town, the masterpiece of contemporary Chinese author Shen Congwen, was based on the small town of Chatong in Xiangxi (western Hunan) on the border with Guizhou and Sichuan, so I decided to “make camp” here with three students from Hong Kong. In 1988 the small town still retained much of its historic look, including stilted buildings, the stone-paved ferry landing, and blue brick arch bridges. I made a number of paintings here, including Chatong Ferry Landing, River Bridge, and this one of Uncle Jiang, an old boatman. At the age of 78, Uncle Jiang was still working as a ferry boatman. He said he knew “Grandpa” from Shen Congwen’s book—“Grandpa” had been the ferryman two miles upstream.

I later asked the innkeeper Sange to find me a true local girl as my model so I could try and capture the charm of “Cuicui” in the novel. The girl who turned up had long hair and was dressed in fashionable red clothing, although there was still something childlike in her features. Sange said that Cuicui ended up marrying someone in Chengdu. She came back in the 1960s with a new haircut—the “long flowing hair” was gone.

《米瑪次仁》

西藏美協主席韓書力的藏族朋友普魯仁增從藏東林芝來拉薩探訪，仁增的14歲兒子米瑪次仁也來了。這孩子真美，那雙眼睛像極了佛像上的眼睛，美極了。

這畫就寫生於韓書力的畫室。

“Migmar Tsering“

Kluphug Rigdzin, a Tibetan friend of Han Shuli, the chairman of the Tibetan Autonomous Region Art and Literature Union, came from Nyingchi in eastern Tibetan to visit him in Lhasa. Rigdzin’s 14-year-old son Migmar Tsering came with him as well. The child was truly beautiful with eyes like the Buddha statues.

This painting was painted plein-air at Han Shuli’s studio.

《嶺南二月》

我在七四、七五年，對於水粉畫的風景寫生最是熱衷，雖然說來總量不多，但每臨對景作畫均興緻勃勃、全力以赴，有如獅子撲兔般全神貫注。

這處景色是肈慶馬安煤礦行政區的一角。後景是樹影斑駁的辦公樓，前景的林蔭道上有棵樹滿是新綠，春意盎然，激起了我的畫興。動筆之先對於如此斑爛繁復的樹葉我不僅是沒有畏縮，反而胸有成竹，因為，我已有腹案：就是大量用畫刀來砌抹前景中的樹葉，這樣畫效果好，又特別。我用筆先畫天空，然後畫後邊的屋樹，最後才來用畫刀抹畫樹葉。這些顏色帶有偶然性、不規則，顯得生動活潑，由於不能絕對控制筆觸，最後還要用筆整理。

在水粉風景寫生中，我於74年閘坡漁港的海邊寫生的海浪描寫也曾大量使用過畫刀。

〝Lingnan in February〞

I was particularly enamored with poster color plein-air landscapes from around 1947 to 1975. There weren't all that many, but I approached every plein-air painting session filled with excitement like a lion pouncing on a rabbit with all its might.

The scene is a corner of the Ma'an Coal Mining District in Zhaoqing. In the background was an office block with a smattering of trees while in the foreground there was one tree covered in the new greenery of spring. The contrast triggered my desire to paint. The complex leaves did not faze me at all because I already had an idea what to do: Make extensive use of a painting knife to lay down the leaves in the foreground because this produced a unique and great effect. I started by painting the sky with the brush, followed by painting the building and trees in the background before finally using the painting knife for the leaves. The random, irregular nature of the leaves made them seem all the more alive. A painting knife didn't have the absolute control offered by brush strokes so it still had to be touched up with a brush afterwards.

Among my poster color plein-air landscapes, I also used the painting knife extensively while painting the waves at the seaside near Zhapo Fishing Harbor in 1974.
