African Wildlife Trust
The African Wildlife Trust (AWT) was developed in Africa out of concern for the poaching of elephant populations of Tanzania.
Our mission is to bridge the gap between the public, community and private sectors; provide specialized antipoaching support and assist in the protection of Africa’s endangered wildlife. BREAKING NEWS: The South African Government agrees to bring an end to the captive lion breeding industry.
This morning at a stakeholder’s feedback meeting in Pretoria, Minister Creecy of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment made a crucial and long-awaited step towards changing the status quo of the commercial captive lion breeding industry in South Africa.
“The [High-Level] Panel identified that the captive lion industry poses risks to the sustainability of wild lion conservation resulting from the negative impact on ecotourism which funds lion conservation and conservation more broadly, the negative impact on the authentic wild hunting industry, and the risk that trade in lion parts poses to stimulating poaching and the illegal trade”, the Minister announced.
“The panel recommends that South Africa does not captive breed lions, keep lions in captivity, or use captive lions or their derivatives commercially. I have requested the department to action this accordingly and ensure that the necessary consultation for implementation is conducted.”
Blood Lions has campaigned against this cruel and unethical industry and its spin-off activities for many years, and we are extremely happy by the Minister’s decision to bring an end to the captive lion breeding industry. We commend Minister Creecy, in her decisive leadership, and we would welcome the chance to play a role in assisting her and the various departments and entities in the phasing out process to come.” BLOOD LIONS NPC.
Full press release coming shortly.

BREAKING: In an historic vote, CITES parties voted to end the capture and export of live wild African elephants from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana & Namibia for zoos! Zimbabwe is currently the main exporter, exporting 108 baby to zoos since 2012. This will save countless African elephants from being ripped away from their families and forced to live in substandard conditions at zoos. There is huge international pressure to urge leaders to affirm this decision next week. The vote = 46 in favor of the ban, 18 against.

Today we celebrate World Elephant Day - an important day that raises awareness regarding the conservation of our elephants!
Its today, commemorating rangers killed or injured in the line of duty, and celebrating the critical work rangers do to protect the world's natural and cultural treasures.
Game and field rangers stand up to poachers almost daily as they battle to end the decimation of wildlife species, ranging from the poaching of rhino and abalone to the illegal removal of plants such as cycads and Proteas. But, their role is also to conserve our precious, endangered and varied biodiversity. World Ranger Day also gives pause to celebrate this role of the ranger.
