We work to instill an awareness and development of the child’s responsibility to themselves and to others through life skills training and re-enforcing the concept that all people are valued and to be respected and that helping one another is a unifying method to accomplish this. As individuals, they will stand together to work for a just and humane society and a life sustaining environment. Special attention is given to HIV/AIDS with the intent that child will have a clear and exact knowledge of the disease and share their knowledge with peers and others. Exploitation and trafficking of children and women is address with the help of the police desk for exploitation and trafficking. Members of the desk have held yearly meetings for the children and caregivers, explaining what to look for and how to report and issue. We have a child protection policy which is adhered to by all members of the staff. In its approach WWU works closely with and local government and community leaders as well as teachers and the local population. These groups are approached and asked for a recommendation when it is time for new student to be accepted and also if there should be a problem which can be settled on the local level. The greater percentage of the population are subsistent farmers, fishermen or livestock dependent. WWU has five centers (Mtakuja, Mmhare, Mkilila, Nyaligamba and Mmazami) with 45 primary school students each (total 225 primary school students). It also sponsors 75 secondary school students and 33 students in vocational training. Vocational training and secondary school students are students who were in the primary school program. There is a counselor assigned to each center where they meet with the children, teachers, local leaders , religious leaders and local population for sharing and counseling four days a week. The fifth day is for a team meeting and writing of reports. Every Saturday the team goes to one of the five centers where they meet with the students for life skills training. Emergencies are handled as they arise. Also major medical care is facilitated and if the caregivers can not afford ordinary medical care such as worms, malaria, etc. WWU will handle it.
