Life is found in the ocean from the surface to the deepest depths.

The open sea has attracted people since ancient times, who initially left the shore for a short distance, not being able to navigate in the open sea, so the first sailors did not leave for a distance greater than the distance from which the shore was still visible.

In the geological annals of our planet, algae also left an imprint in the form of stromatolites, diatomites and limestones.

The first description of the seabed belongs to Herodotus, who describes in his records dating back to 450 BC. e., the Mediterranean near Egypt.

Participating in the processes of the circulation of substances in nature, algae are active agents of self-cleaning of water bodies, as well as primary soil-forming processes and restoration of soil fertility.

According to the degree of isolation (location), internal, peripheral, inter-island and Mediterranean seas are distinguished

There are different classifications of seas. Classification under maritime law does not coincide with oceanographic classification.
