Comely peonies
lush peonies
Peonies interested people over 2 thousand years ago. It is known that in China these flowers were held in high esteem even before 200 BC.
The peony was named after the hero of ancient legends, the doctor Pean, who saved the gods from wounds received on the battlefield.
Peony is a perennial plant that can live up to 100 years with the right conditions and proper care.
In floral symbolism, peonies stand for romance, elegance, honor, wealth and abundance.
Peter Brand Peony
The most famous purple peony is the Peter Brand peony. For a garden display that actually changes color as time goes by, consider a generous planting of this amazing peony. Peter Brand is a sumptuous double variety of deep ruby red that matures to a purplish hue, giving the landscape a cast of cool, calming purple. The lush flowers reach an impressive 6" wide and look great in cut-flower bouquets and fresh floral arrangements. The 34-36" stems are statuesque but strong, so there's no danger of flopping flowers or drooping foliage from late spring to early summer when Peter Brand is in full bloom. Peonies are long-lived plants that can last for generations in the landscape with proper care. Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, deep, fertile soil for best results.
Sarah Bernhardt Peony
The most famous peony is the Sarah Bernhardt peony.
An all-time favorite and definite showstopper for you garden! Blooming heavily in late spring through early summer, the Sarah Bernhardt Peony produces very large, rose-pink double blooms. Their ruffled inner petals flecked with raspberry and edges fading to a paler pink, will simply take your breath away. The lush, bushy mound of glossy, deep green, divided foliage remains attractive throughout the summer until the first frost. Display this lovely peony outside in your garden or inside your home. Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society, Sarah Bernhardt Peony makes an excellent cut flower, as well as a great background or border plant. Peonies need to be planted in rich, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. This peony in particular loves full sun. The extremely showy bloom of this peony will attract butterflies when in bloom. Be sure to pinch off the spent flowers after blooming. In the fall after the frost, cut the foliage down to the ground. The following spring the plant will emerge with new growth, ready for a new season. Hardiness Zones 3-8 Specifications: Mature Size (H x W): 2?'-3' X 2?'-3'; Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil; Hardiness Zones: 3-8; Sun Exposure: Full Sun; Characteristics: Mounded, glossy green foliage divided into oval to lance-shaped leaflets; Bloom: Very large, rose-pink double blooms, with ruffled inner petals flecked with raspberry and a paler pink toward the edges; Growth Rate: Fast; Tolerance: Rabbit, deer; Tip: Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (ie. Duchesse De Nemours Peony
A very beautiful pure white, glamorous peony!! Aromatic and dainty!! The Duchesse De Nemours Peony is garden royalty! The bulbs produce a double, globe-shaped creamy-white flower that has a tint of yellow at the petal's base. This perennial peony is a late season bloomer. Your Duchesse De Nemours Peonies will attract butterflies with their 5-inch showy blooms!
Armani Peony
One of the darkest, reddest peonies ever grown — Armani Peony — boasts satiny red blooms that are fully double, the intricately ruffled petals creating a tasteful, sophisticated look. The stylish blooms make incomparable cut flowers, and this long-lived, trouble-free plant is at home in most beds, borders, or foundation plantings. Easy and not picky about soil, just give 'Armani' Peony a sunny spot, keep the soil moist but well-drained, and enjoy decades of garden beauty.
If you are new to the joy of peonies, let us enumerate some of their merits. First, they are exceptionally carefree once established. One of the longest-lived perennials, a single plant can last for generations. Second, their phenol content makes them unappetizing to insects, rabbits, and even deer. Third, they offer 3 seasons of color: reddish spring foliage, bright late spring and early summer blooms; and bronze or purple fall tones. Fourth, they are equally suited for garden or vase, offering old-fashioned charm plus armloads of blooms. Very long-lived after cutting, the flowers can even be used as everlastings.
Peonies are a nice garden "bridge" plant, looking something like a perennial and something like a shrub. Set in front of large shrubs or trees, they make a big splash of color without occupying a lot of space. Traditional companions to peonies are spring-and summer-flowering bulbs, blue- and white-flowered perennials, flowering shrubs such as azaleas, and ornamental grasses. Bare root 3/5 Eye. Add gorgeous color to your landscape with 'Armani' Peony.
