Giraffes are exclusively herbivorous animals. The structure of the body and physiology allow them to feed on the foliage of tree crowns - at a height where they have no competitors. They prefer acacia trees. The giraffe covers the branch with its long tongue, pulls it to its mouth and plucks the leaves, pulling its head back.

According to Rob Siemens, a zoologist from Namibia, long necks arose as a result of males fighting with their necks. A male with a longer neck won more often and received more attention from females, thereby producing more offspring.

Giraffes live in the savannas of Africa. Today they can be found only to the south and southeast of the Sahara, primarily in the savannahs of East and South Africa. Populations north of the Sahara were eradicated by man in ancient times: in the time of Ancient Egypt, they existed in the Nile Delta and on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. In the 20th century, the range of giraffes shrank significantly again. Today, the largest populations of giraffes live in nature reserves and reserves.

Such work was done only now, when scientists connected modern image recognition technologies based on artificial intelligence to this task. "In this work, we analyzed data on survival and photographs of spots of Maasai giraffes (one of the largest subspecies. — Note NS), — says Penn State University professor Derek Lee (Derek Lee). "We have shown that the pattern of spots affects survival and is inherited, passing from mother to child."

However, it turned out to be much more difficult to analyze this complex pattern, which resembles pieces of cracked soil in the heat, than the stripes of tigers and zebras. The skin itself in these animals has even pigmentation, but the spots can be of the most different sizes, positions and shapes - from almost round to "blots" with sharp corners. Therefore, it was not even possible to trace its inheritance and variability in different generations.

Male giraffes reach a height of 5.5-6.1 m (about 1/3 of the length is the neck) and weigh up to 900-1200 kg. Females, as a rule, are slightly smaller and lighter.
