Lilacs have been cultivated for over 500 years and during that time they have evolved into many varieties, each with its own shape, scent and colour.
Throughout its cultivation (more than 500 years), more than 2300 different varieties of lilac have been bred. The only rival in the number of varieties is the rose.
Lilacs are named after Siringa, the goddess of joy and tranquillity. One has to assume, quite justifiably.
The goddess Siringa, after whom the plant was named, was responsible for idyll and joy. Arguably, the lilacs themselves do a fine job of these functions.
Every year Boston celebrates what is known as Lilac Sunday. This is the only day of the year when picnics are allowed at the Boston Arboretum, which contained 442 lilac bushes.
