The basic positions of players on a basketball team
Knowing each player's role will give you a better understanding of the game.
Everything about basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which everything depends on the unique abilities of each team member. And while players on modern basketball teams are versatile and can fill in for each other to a greater or lesser extent, each player has a role to play.
In this article, we will discuss the five traditional roles in basketball without which no game can happen. Why do you need to know this? To understand how a team is originally built and, therefore, how the game itself is structured.
Knowing your position on the team will help you lead your team to victory! This knowledge will help fans better analyze the game and appreciate the complexity of each move on the field.
Here are the roles we will be talking about:
Point guard
Offensive guard
Light forward
Light forward
Center
Point guard
The point guard is usually the shortest player on the team but has highly developed ball handling skills and a high basketball IQ. These players are usually responsible for dribbling the ball down the field. They also make sure that the offense is tailored to the opponent's weaknesses and strengths. It is no coincidence that the point guard is often called the field general or coach on the court.
On defense, these players are responsible for containing the other team's point guard, and their ability to analyze, predict, and thwart the opponent's strategy is crucial to the outcome of the game. Therefore, it is important that the rest of the team listens to the point guard's recommendations and that he himself is good at communicating with others.
Strengths: Ball handling, speed, high basketball IQ, passing technique.
Offensive guard.
The offensive guard is a position interchangeable with the point guard role, as their roles are similar. However, unlike the point guard, who focuses more on building the offense, the attacker's goal is to score from anywhere on the court. Because of this, many offensive tactics center around the defender's shots.
This position is more focused on offensive play, and the defensive tactics of this player are implemented around the weakest member of the opposing team. Attacking players can also help the point guard with the ball when he is under increased guard.
Strengths: Accurate shots, navigation, speed, ball handling.
Light Forward
The light forward is the most versatile player on the team, both offensively and defensively. This is because they are usually slightly smaller in height and build than the power forward and center, but they have accuracy, ball handling skills, and the basketball IQ of a guard.
These players usually play near the edge of the three point arc because there is relative freedom of movement and you can make shots from there. Light forwards usually block the opposing team's best player because they can reach and interfere with the shot, they have enough weight to push the opponent away, and they are endowed with the speed and agility of defenders.
Strengths: Accurate shots, ball handling, basketball IQ, rebounding, block shot.
Heavy Forward.
The hard forward is usually the second tallest player on the team and plays at the free throw line. This player is responsible for blocking the opponent; it is up to him to determine whether or not the offense is successful. Because he plays such an important role on offense, he must also be able to shoot the ball from midrange accurately in order to score if the ball is passed to him after a screen pass to the player in front of him.
In addition, a heavy forward is often responsible for holding the ball, allowing the stronger members of the team to advance. Defensively they are responsible for defending and blocking shots that the center cannot reach.
Strengths: Blocking shots and assists, mid-range shooting, ball retention.
Center
Center is the tallest and heaviest player in the team playing under the basket. Centers dominate with their weight and strength, using their height and leap to throw the ball over the heads of inferior players. These players also block opponents near the edge of the court to give room for a defender or light forward to throw.
Traditionally, center players were not capable of high-precision shooting, but today they are at least capable of mid-range and some are even capable of a three-point shot. They are called "stretch 5" centers.
Strengths: Height, ball retention, shot and pass blocking.

Discover volleyball
Volleyball is a popular ball game that unites a billion people on the planet. Its simple rules, dynamism and accessibility have made it a hobby for many people. The development of the game, its rules and features, as well as the necessary equipment - all this can be found in the article.
About one billion people on the planet at different levels are fond of volleyball and play at the amateur or professional level. Truly outstanding figures that show, on the one hand, the breadth of distribution of the game, and on the other, that the game is interesting and accessible to people. Another record for volleyball is the number of member countries of an international federation. 222 federations are members of FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball).
Volleyball is an accessible and dynamic game. It has won the love of players and fans around the world. There are many variations of volleyball, such as beach volleyball, mini volleyball, sit volleyball (Paralympic discipline), park volleyball and the familiar to many from childhood pioneer volleyball. In this article we will tell you the rules of the game, its history and why volleyball became so popular.
The Substitute for Basketball
American William Morgan thought of a moving game that would not be as contact and intense as basketball. The older generation could not afford to play it because of its high intensity and constant jumping. That's when the idea of hanging a tennis net 1.98 centimeters high and tossing a basketball over it came to mind. Morgan was looking for a game that could be played en masse without much in the way of fixtures or equipment, such as at lunchtime. A little later they abandoned the heavy basketball, and then renamed the game, originally called "mintonet" (some sources call "minton" as short for "badminton," which was similar) to volleyball, that is, "hitting the ball with a fly ball" as translated from English. In 1895 Morgan invented volleyball, and a year later it was included in the program of games of the Christian Youth Organization, where Morgan worked as the director of one of the schools.
Fun fact: William Morgan had a passion for sports and knew James Naismith, the father of basketball. So it was no coincidence that he thought precisely about simplifying the then-growing popularity of the sport and adapting it for schools and amateur athletes.
Development of the Game and World Fame
The goal in volleyball is to send the ball to the opponent's side so that it lands on his court or that the opponent makes a mistake. Six players from each team are placed on the court and no more than three consecutive touches of the ball are allowed (not counting when the ball touches players on the block).

In the beginning, there was no limit on the number of players on the court or on the number of touches during the transfer of the ball to the opponent's court. The simplicity of the rules allowed volleyball to gain many fans and gradually spread outside the United States. Its popularity grew with the advent of FIVB. European Championships were organized, then World Championships, and finally, in 1964, volleyball made its debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The USSR national team became the first winner. Nowadays all major volleyball tournaments are held: national championships, Champions League, World Cup, and the World League.
Interesting fact: the record attendance at a volleyball game was set in Brazil, at the Maracana soccer stadium. A friendly match between the teams of Brazil and the USSR was attended by over 100 thousand people!
Rules, terms and tactics of volleyball
Over its 100-year history the rules of the game have undergone many changes. A team can declare up to 14 players, 6 of which are on the court. The size of the court is 18x9 meters and the net now hangs much higher than in the beginning - at 2.43 meters for men and 2.24 meters for women. Each player has a zone on the field, it is conventional and has no clear boundaries, but there are certain restrictions on the actions of those players who stand further from the net, for example, they can not put a block and attack closer than three meters from the net.
There are several roles in modern volleyball in which players specialize:
Diagonal - the main attackers, earning more points for teams.
Central blocker - responsible for defending against the opponent's attack on the block. Also attacks himself when possible.
The extra-ball player is an attacking player who assists with receiving, shoots difficult balls, and helps the liaison player.
