This Yucatan cottage screams romantic couples weekend, so whether you are doing long distance with your partner or are in need of a vacation away from the kids, this colorful one-bedroom home could be the ideal spot. The dining and living area opens up to a private plunge pool; beyond that is open skies and greenery. The house itself is in the Yucatán jungle, 10 minutes away from the town of Valladolid, and is equipped with the basics: in the kitchen, you’ll find a full-sized fridge, a two-burner electric stove, a toaster, and a French press; there’s also Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and an open-ceiling shower.

It's hard to believe you can actually stay in this historic villa in southern Italy's countryside. Float along among the trees in this expansive pool, then take a leisurely afternoon nap inside the cool, stone-walled bedrooms (there are three, two with doubles and one with a queen, and three bathrooms). There's a solarium and garden to check out, too, plus a cheery yellow lounge in a shaded part of the backyard.

South America's Iguazú Falls, located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, make all other waterfalls look like mere trickles in comparison. The system of more than 200 cascades (reaching heights of around 270 feet) can be viewed from surrounding walkways and catwalks, but we're fans of the more adventurous vantage-point—hopping on an Iguazú Jungle inflatable raft and sailing directly under the exhilarating, high-pressure falls.

Ah, the elusive Northern Lights. So many factors are at play when it comes to seeing the technicolor phenomenon—location, time of year, weather conditions—but it's hard to lose with an excursion to Finnish Lapland. The Arctic area is one of the planet's best for lights viewing, especially if you get to sleep in an igloo hotel at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort or mobile Aurora Bubble Sled. Up your viewing chances by planning a trip between December and March.
