Big thank you to everyone who supported our recent Christmas Food Box Appeal. We were able to provide over 150 boxes to needy and vulnerable families.

10/01/2022

Yipeee!! After nearly two years, schools in Uganda finally opened today!
Staff at the Centre have been preparing for the children's return as best as they can. Sadly not all will return to schools for many reasons. Having missed so much vital education there will be many challenges ahead for both staff and students. Please pray them!

These baskets contain simple food items which to are expensive luxuries to those in Uganda. We are aiming to bless as many needy families in the Kampala District with such gifts this Christmas. Each basket costs just Ā£15. Please help us to reach as many families as possible and donate to our Christmas Food campaign. Thank you.

It is with very deep sadness to let you know that Jill Adkin passed away on 23rd October, at the age of 67.

Jill has been a trustee of Nsumbi Trust since it was formed in 2005 and passionately cared for poor and vulnerable families in Uganda. She visited Uganda on many occasions and was much loved by very many people who appreciated her kindness, her willingness to help and her gentle ways. In particular, we give thanks to God for all the work that Jill did in relation to the child sponsorship programme at the Stephen Jota Childrenā€™s Centre. Many lives have been transformed for the better through Jillā€™s dedication and hard work.

Jill was diagnosed with motor neurone disease four years ago and, despite the severe challenges this brought, Jill continued to keep in touch with young people in Uganda. Inspired by her deep Christian faith, Jillā€™s life was one of love, care and compassion and we will miss her greatly.

Please pray for Jillā€™s family, her husband Dave and her four children, Emma, Ian, Paul and Fay and their families.

We will be happy to pass on any messages to Jillā€™s family.

Thank you for your continued support. Your prayers and generous giving are making a real difference to many in Uganda. The challenges for people there just go on and on. A full lockdown for 6 weeks was announced by the president on 18th June. This includes the complete closure of all schools, a ban on private and public transport including in the capital Kampala. Only vehicles carrying cargo and those transporting the sick or essential workers are permitted to operate on the roads. An ongoing night-time curfew will stay in place.
Many people are dying and the health care system is overwhelmed. There is a shortage of oxygen and ventilators. The situation is similar to what happened in India. The country has been put on the UK red list for travel.
We are in the process of providing emergency aid through the Community Food Bank to support families who are in danger of starvation. Please pray for this country as this latest wave looks to be particularly devastating.

FBC COMMUNITY HUB
Nsumbi Trust in partnership with Family Believers Church is supporting a community outreach programme to help meet the ongoing needs of people in a disadvantaged neighbourhood. This area of Kampala and this Church is the place Pastor Stephen Jota first saw the large number of children out of school and was inspired to begin the Children's Centre. The Food Bank and soap making continue to have a positive impact on the area.

DIGITAL FUTURES
One of the strands of this work in the community is a programme for young people with no employment to develop key computing capabilities. The aim will be to help them develop a set of skills to become confident, empowered and self-reliant individuals. As well as learning about basic software applications, they will learn how to repair phones and computers.

DIGITAL FUTURES PROGRAMME MANAGER
Nicholas Kigozi, our programme manager, has a shop in Nakulabye. He deals in IT equipment, selling a range of computer related items and media and also repairing computers and phones. He has already trained more than 20 young people in various IT related skills, which he knows from his own experience, will lead to productive employment. Eleven of his ā€œgraduatesā€ have started their own businesses and others have been able to get jobs because of the digital skills they have acquired. He has extended his retail space by adding a room on the back where this ā€œhands onā€ training will take place
If you are able to support The FBC Community Hub to enable more school leavers to get the benefit of this training please get in touch or click on the link below.

We are so pleased that our P6 children were allowed to return to school this week after lockdown. They join our P7s who have been back a few months now. We hope other year groups will be able to return soon too. Here are some snaps from their first few days back.

Photos from Nsumbi Trust Projects's post 27/01/2021

We are so pleased that children in P7 (top primary) and those exam year students in S3 and S4 have been able to return to school again after their official Christmas break. They are busy preparing for proposed exams in March.
The Ministry of Education has recently announced that all children should be allowed back to school in February although a date has not yet been set. The pictures show our P7 children in a recent maths lesson.

23/01/2021

Last week Uganda saw a presidential election. The incumbent president Museveni won. He has been in power for 35 years! We understand it was peaceful despite some unrest in the weeks leading up to event. It means schools could reopen for the start of term but with Covid finally starting to increase it may be delayed again.
Please continue to pray for the health and safety of the children who would normally be at the centre. We continue to do what we can to support families and the local community with the help of our partners in the area.

Wow! The generosity of our supporters is amazing! Thank you so much! We have been able to fund so many Christmas Food boxes/baskets to feed vulnerable families in Uganda this Christmas.

03/12/2020

These are simple foods we can buy easily but to those in Uganda these are luxuries and often unaffordable. We would love to be able to provide these in our Christmas Boxes to vulnerable families. If you would like to help click on the link below.

Thank you so much!

02/12/2020

In the run up to Christmas, we would like to distribute a box of food to as many vulnerable families as possible in a deprived part of Kampala, Uganda.

Each box costs Ā£15 and will contain items like rice, margarine and biscuits which these families would not be able to afford.

Covid restrictions are finally easing in Uganda just as cases are rising. Many vulnerable households are still struggling to feed their families.

If you can help please visit our Virgin Money Giving page via the link below.

And they're back!! We are so pleased that our P7 students have finally been able to return to school after a long lockdown. The required covid safety measures are certified and in place at the centre. Students are socially distanced and wear masks in classes. We anticipate other year groups returning once they are permitted to do so.

We have been making such much needed repair and renovation work to the children's Centre during lockdown and think it all now looks rather great! We can wait to welcome back some of primary students this week for the first time since lockdown!! Uganda can now open schools if they meet covid safe requirements.

The Maize Mill is up and running again! This means the staple diet of Posho, made from maize flour, is always available for our schools. As well as this local people who have grown maize can now get it milled at a fair price. The Mill is supported by Nsumbi Enterprise Trust ā€“ a Ugandan NGO linked to Nsumbi Trust - and was built in 2011 using funds provided by a number of generous donations and especially by gifts from the congregation at Christ Church Chislehurst.
The Mill has recently been overhauled and is being managed by Samuel. The NET Maize Mill is also a business venture

Photos from Nsumbi Trust Projects's post 06/10/2020

Did you know that posho is a maize like porridge which forms part of a staple diet in Uganda?! It is often eaten with beans and the children in our centre are given it most days. We also do our best to provide them with lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat where available. We have continued to provide nutritious meals for the children who have remained in the care of Pastor Stephen and Norah during lockdown and also enabled the local foodbank to provide essential foods and ingredients to many families in the local communities.

Our emergency lockdown food appeal has raised over Ā£2000! Thank you to everyone who supported this. With your donations we have been able to fund a local foodbank in partnership with local pastors and churches and enable the soap making enterprise to begin.

Soap Making in Lockdown - Uganda 02/10/2020

With your help we have recently been able to support a small soap making business in Uganda. Having access to soap is vital in helping to control the spread of the virus yet not everyone can afford or source it. It is now being made locally and distributed. It is making a big difference.
