*Common egg shell deformities and their causes 🥚🥚*

Today let me answer to this common question from various many farmers👇🏼 follow in relation to the numbers on each given picture numbered in the above photo👆

1) *Blood stained eggs* eggs with smears of blood from a pr*****ed cloaca, or earky laying.
causes👉 over weight pullets, early laying, long day hours, poor hygiene in cages or boxes

2) *Dirty eggs*
if the egg shell has sticky feaces, it is important to avoid feed ingredients that cause wet and sticky feaces
*causes* 👉wet droppings, poor gut health, large amounts of indigestable compounds in the feed, electrolyte imbalance

3) *calcium deposited*
the white deposits on the shell are signs of deffective shell glands, too much calcium in diet👌

4) *Corrug*ted eggs*
these eggs normally have a rough surface
*causes* 👉 mycotoxins, saline water, heat stress, older hens, poor nutrition especially vitamin d3 and calcium.

5) *wrinkled egg shells*
eggs with creased and wrinkled surfaces.
*causes* 👉stress, over crowding, infectious bronchitis

6) *Broken and mended* have you seen eggs that are laid broken but shows they were amended😳 okukuba eggi ekiraka😀
*causes* 👉 stress during calcification, when a bird is in the process of laying and something shocks them, interms of sound, or wild birds. and the egg happens to get a crack from inside, then hen amends it from inside and comes out that way.

7) *Soft shelled*
This is laid with an incomplete shell, with only a thin layer of calcium on the shell membrane.
*causes* 👉excessive phosphorus consumption, heat stress, saline water, mycotoxins, older hens..

8) *white banded eggs*
😀 i believe every farm has seen this egg and severally. if two eggs come into contact with each other in the shell gland pouch, normal calcification or shell formation is interrupted👌, the first egg retained will have the white band markings

*causes* 👉 stress and changes in lighting👌👌

N.b: farmers should nit take egg shell colours and shapes so lighly👌, inmost cases they give you fast and quick signs of the birds health that may need quick intervention 👌

we shall use simple understandable and words😄

lets go, now unlike humans, the chicken has 2 sections of the reproductive system, the *o***y* and the *oviduct*

*O***y* : Here are what we call o**m or developed yolks, these are in every fenale chicken over 13,000 though some may fail to get fertilised.. mature o**m is then released to the *oviduct*

The oviduct as the second part of the reproductive system has these bu small parts where an egg is formed🤔😃 let's see..

*infundibulum* : this serves as the reservoir for spermatozoa call it sperms necessary for fertilisation to take place.. wano an egg spends here *15-18 minutes*.

*magnum* : as you see in the picture, this is the longest part of the oviduct and the yolk stays here for *3 hours* 🤔. here albumen or thick white oba kyemuyita egg white is added on here

*Isthmus*: this is where the inner and outer shell membranes are added.. that inner linning kemulaba covering the inner egg white oba albumen.. egg stays here for *75 minutes* 😳

*Shell gland* : it is 4 inches long and egg remains here for *20 plus hours* 😳 as it's name, the shell is placed on the egg here. the shell is made up of calcium bi carbonate, the hen gets 45-47% of calcium from its body bones and the rest from the feeds you give to your hen.. that means a farmer contributes 53 or 55% of the calcium needed by the hen in your feeds..

Did you know *Prolapse* is another deadly one in chicken🤔🤔👇🏻👇🏻

Prolapse is when a chicken's oviduct turns out of the vent🙆‍♂️🙆‍♂️
A chicken's vent blows out the oviduct and in most cases high mortalities or deaths may incur🤔🤔

Prolapse is very common to layer birds and take note of the causes👇🏻

Early laying, birds that tend to start laying earlier have higher chances of prolapse🤔, farmers who tend to change bird's feeds to layers feed before dates take note..

2. Calcium and energy levels imbalance.. this is why you need to always revise your feed formulations depending on environment..

Treatment!!

🤔🤔There is no specific treatment for prolapse, however preventive measures can be taken..

1. cull all the birds with signs of prolapse,

2. inmost cases when the oviduct blows out, othe chickens will peck at it, which may lead to hemorrhages which at times cause deaths

3. balance your calcium, and energy levels and Phosporus in your feed or else mind adding *DCP* in your feeds..

4. giving of *vitamins with electrolytes* may be of help as you work on balancing your feeds formulations..

Note: At times people confuse prolapse with cannibalism.. and its realised normally when high mortalities have been discovered. Prolapse can cause a high economic loss👆👆👆

*Why layer birds?*
Layer chicken are developed for commecial eggs production and tend to economically lay for a period of 73-80 weeks and after sold as ex layers.
Remember a good layer chicken lays about 270-312 eggs ayear visa vi a feed intake of 45-60 kgs a year depending on breed choice/ selection.
I therefore apeal to any farmer willing to earn money in eggs production from layer hens to be very vigillant in breed selection because its the breed that makes u a great farmer or fails you.

🐓🐓 I therefore appeal to many business men and women out there to invest in layer production as its the only business that pays a farmer daily and genuinely more than even rentals. I have seen many people reaching me with ideas of rentals but after trying layer production they turned their rental houses to poultry houses and now no regrets.

However many people have joined this business with alot of excitement and with no prior knowledge and ended up in burning pan.
Farmers, poultry like other businesses needs to be revised, searched, farm planning, production plan and a management plan.

*Where do you lose money in layers business ???*
*Farm planning;* planning for how your farm is going to run is very important. This should be done with the help of an expert in the poultry field just to convert your dreams to paper work.. Here a number of birds you wish to venture is computed depending on the capital a farmer is having.. ,the production plan, management plan is drawn. I have seen farmers who have taken birds in high numbers and along the way they sell them off or half of it just because of failure to feed them in the mid rearing period. So the total feeds for the total number of birds should be calculated and drawn for a prticular period until birds have laid up to 65% thats when they can feed by themselves, feeders, drinkers, transport, brooding costs.. All these costs have to computed and fit your capital.. This should be done to avoid disapointment alomg the way in the rearing period to avoid losses

Breed selection; Once your breed is not capable of giving you the highest production of atleast 300 eggs a year your in trouble. Good layers lay highly with minimum feed intake, less production cost, strong in disease resistance .You need to know that there breeds that cant cope up in high cold temperature areas and areas that are hot(desert like) so in this case you may end up blaming the bird's perfomance yet that particular breed thats the highest it can give you..

This has been a common question from so many farmers on different forrums ..

Well, poultry business is not for not neither for the poor nor rich🐓 poultry farming only pays back to those who are ready to learn, experience, face risks,and so many things..

Last year I met this farmer who had done farming for almost 5 years but guess what?? He made losses not because birds fell sick, Noo!! but poor feeders!!, He had 3000 layer birds but because of poor feeders he would loose about 10kgs of feed all poured in the chicken litter. Immagine if a kilo is at 1500shs(least) that is around 15,000 loss per day.. how about a week, a month, a year..??🤔🤔 Remember the most expensive bit of farming at large is *feeds*🤔🤦‍♂️

Back to our qtn.. the chicken to give you an egg, it only wants enough quality feeds!!, 🤔🤔 This thing of quality feed, I think I will define what do we call quality feed next time...

Poultry farming is for those who are ready to fail and stand up there and then.., it's a business for those who are ready to learn and change..
