"Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater body in the world and supports a human population of over 30 million. Over the last 4 decades, the biodiversity of the lake and its catchment has been compromised. The indigenous fish species variety has reduced by 80%, and over 70% of the forest cover in the catchment has been lost. "

Lake Victoria’s basin has fertile soils with a climate that supports cash crops such tea and coffee and food crops such as beans, maize and bananas. Most industrial expansion in the African Great Lakes region is in the Lake Victoria basin. Some minerals, such as gold, are mined in the lake basin. Several tourism destinations exist on islands and shorelines, and there is potential for sport fishing, boating, and cruising safaris.
