World Down Syndrome day
Inclusion, providing equal access to opportunities and resources for those who might otherwise be excluded. This is what ought to be done and yet people living with Down Syndrome are still excluded in many sectors of life. Social, Education, Economy, Politics.
What’s your view about inclusionmeans, share with us
As we celebrate world hearing day, did you know we all at risk of losing our hearing to noise? Good news is that this is preventable. Practice safe listening;
1. Keep volume to half when using earphones
2. Take quiet breaks after 1 -3 hours of using headphones or being in a noisy environment
3. Use ear plugs if you work in a noise environment
On the 16th of October, we concluded the campaign with our parent training and workshop in partnership with
We equipped the parents in attendance and the staff with skills to carryover speech therapy techniques at home and in the classroom. Each parent was given our resource, as well as the team .
We extend our gratitude to the team for partnering with us and to every individual that supported this campaign.
Our fifth and final myth about Down Syndrome..
Myth: Down syndrome is hereditary and runs in families.
Fact: Most cases of Down syndrome are sporadic, chance events. However, in translocation (which
accounts for three to four percent of cases), one parent may be identified as a carrier of a translocated
chromosome.
Down syndrome does not otherwise run in families and a sibling or aunt has no greater
chance of conceiving a child with Down syndrome. In general, the incidence of having a second child
with Down syndrome is about one in 100.
The campaign comes to a close today and we extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one who has supported a child in this campaign.
We look forward to our training and workshop tomorrow from 9:00am -1:00pm
Myth #4 about DS

Myth #3
Individuals with Down syndrome have severe developmental and intellectual delays.
Fact: Individuals with Down syndrome do have physical and cognitive delays, each individual deferring from another, however, that does not disregard their ability to learn and achieve skills and goals. Achievement cannot be restricted to a certain IQ level or academic success. Individuals with DS can achieve high proficiency in many areas that are not measured by test/ academic scores. With the right support they are able to thrive, even at an independent level.
PS. These photos were taken by M12 photography in Nigeria in 2017 to spread awareness about Down syndrome. Aren't they beautiful?
On the 16th of October, will have the workshop and training for caretakers and parents for children with Down syndrome. This will be done in partnership with .
To support our campaign, you can sponsor a speech therapy resource (Functional Word cards) for a child at only 25,000shs.
Myth #2 about Down syndrome.
All people with Down syndrome are/look the same.
Fact: People with Down syndrome share physical characteristics that identify them because of their genetic make up, however, they look more like their family members than other people with Down syndrome. Each individual is unique, with their particular strengths and weaknesses.
We are busting the myths about Down syndrome as we spread awareness this October.
Myth #1- People with Down Syndrome are always happy and affectionate.
Fact- Much as people with Down syndrome often express emotions of joy, they are not always happy and affectionate. Just like everyone else, they experience and express a wide range of emotions and have diverse characters, traits and moods. You can support an individual with Down syndrome by getting to know them and understanding them as individuals.

This article, written in 2016 gave collective accounts of the living experiences of caretakers and individuals with Down syndrome (DS) in Kinshasha, DRC. Some of which include; the myths surrounding the cause of DS, perceptions of the community, and the realities of integration and equal opportunities.
Five years down the road, more awareness has been raised and more information has been shared about DS across Africa, however, some of these perceptions remain in our communities.
As we countdown to the training workshop, will be debunking the myths around DS and sharing ways to support. Do follow us on our social media pages so as not to miss out!
October is here! The month we have been looking forward to.
October is Down Syndrome awareness month and we have a lot planned as
Happy Fri-Yay!
As we conclude Alzheimer's awareness month, we extend our thoughts and support to the families and caretakers.
As Speech-Language therapists/pathologists, our goal is to maintain quality of life of the person with Alzheimer's by helping them to stay as independent as possible via their ability to communicate, for as long as possible. We also work to ensure that they feed and swallow safely.
This article by Jessica Bull, MS, CCC-SLP, delves further into the importance of speech therapy for the Alzheimer's patient. Do check it out.
