Hello Farmers!
In light of the ongoing AFRICAN SWINE FEVER (ASF) epidemic, we think it's important to talk about how to improve our chances of keeping the disease away from our farms. It's a long article, but bare with it as it is worth the read.
African Swine Fever is the most dangerous disease a pig farmer has to worry about because it's highly contagious and equally fatal.
Once it hits the farm, that's just about it for all the animals on the farm. Regardless of how many there are.
Research shows that it isn't airborne, but rather spreads through contact.
The only way it spreads through the air is if it's carried by birds of prey e.g crows, eagles etc.
The people, animals, birds etc by which the virus is spread are termed as vehicles.
The number one leading vehicle by which ASF is spread is us, the human beings.
This is because we're the ones with whom the pigs will inevitably have to interact as we are the ones to take care of them or have to buy them.
These can be fellow visiting farmers, vet doctors, farm workers etc.
These usually carry the virus from infected areas and right onto a farm with healthy animals.
Other ways by which the virus is spread can be through our chosen feeding program.
For example; Table scrap feeding or left overs are a very serious bio-hazard as they sometimes could contain meat from pigs that had contracted ASF. If the meat wasn't properly cooked, then chances are that the virus is present in the left overs and just like that, you contaminate your farm with just one serving.
So table scrap feeding might appear cheap, but it's highly risky for any pig farmer. That's why it's totally puzzling to find a farmer that has invested a lot into their farms in terms of genetics, structure and labour, but looking to cut costs in the worst way possible. By giving table scrap. This puts everything one has put into their farms at risk and just like that, what appeared cheap becomes the highest cost a farmer could ever have to pay.
I know some of us are saying... "Well, I don't give my pigs any left overs containing meat". Well, has it occured to U that perhaps the person that was eating that food had just visited a farm that had ASF and people being people, hadn't washed his hands and thus straight away contaminated a delicious serving and posho and beans?
If not, then think again.
It's altogether better to do away with table scrap feeding if one is to reduce the risk of infection.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT AFRICAN SWINE FEVER NEITHER HAS A VACCINE NOR CURE. PLEASE LET NO ONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. THEY'RE LOOKING TO EXPLOIT YOU.
The mutation rate of the virus has thus far made it difficult to make/culture a vaccine. This, coupled with the disease's high mortality rate, has made it equally difficult to formulate a treatment for the disease as well.
So, how do we keep our farms healthy?
There's only one way. And that is BIO-SECURITY.
Bio Security are the various preventive measures we put on our farms to ensure that we keep out any bio-hazards. Bio-hazards/biological hazards are substances that pose a threat to the health of living organisms.
For any pig farmer that hopes to be a major player in the industry, this should be a priority. In fact, ASF notwithstanding, one had better not venture into piggery if they're not willing to invest in bio-security. Not unless they're looking just to burn some cash.
Bio-security and livestock farming are inseparable because absence of bio-security puts the farm at risk of infection and like I mentioned earlier, some diseases like ASF, have no cure or vaccine.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIO SECURITY MEASURES?
The number one bio security measure and most effective is to keep people away from your farm.
Human beings are the most potent vehicle for ASF and other diseases and so keeping them away from your farm will save U from a world of hurt.
The best way to do this is, if possible, construct your farm far from the road in a sparsely populated area and not too close to other farms.
Secure it with a fence around it to keep out animals and human beings alike and also put a gate that is always locked with a padlock. Let it only be accessible to farm workers.
ENSURE TO KEEP PEOPLE AWAY, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT COME AS BUYERS as these sometimes intentionally contaminate farms so that U call them for a desperate sale.
It's better to put a display pen where they can watch the animals from a distance.
If U can, let the workers that tend to your herds live on the farm by constructing proper, well equipped housing facilities.
Put foot baths at the entrance of the farm and entrance of every pen and ensure that they're always filled with disinfectant.
Put gumboots and overalls at the farm entrance so that only on farm gumboots are used to access the farm. Overalls should be worn over ordinary clothes and should always be washed property with soap/detergent.
It's better when you subdivide your animals into units i.e Sow unit where U have your gilts and pregnant sows, farrowing units where U have breastfeeding sows and creeping piglets, Starter/Weaning units where U keep your weaned piglets and Fattening/Finishing unit where U keep animals ready for sale.
Of all these, protect your Sow and Starter units the most jealousy.
Have specific workers attend to specific units if possible.
Remember the bird threat we spoke about at the beginning? We need to find a way to keep them out. The best way would be to put wire mesh/chain links in the windows and ventilators so as to keep the air flowing, but not let the birds through. But the mesh should be strong enough to not be torn through / destroyed by the stubborn pigs. Or better yet, ventilation should be placed out of pig's reach like it is with modern structures.
If you're doing piggery on a grand scale, it wouldn't hurt to have the units as different farms so that if one is hit by any disease, you don't lose all at once as the others will survive.
Have an oncall farm vet doctor to quickly diagnose any illness on the farm.
Have a sick-bay where sick animals are treated away from the rest of the herd.
It is also extremely important to keep a pen off farm where any new acquired animals are kept for a given period before they're introduced amongst your herd and also have someone attend to only them during that time. This is for both the small scale and large scale farmer as genetic improvement is every farmer's game and we do this by buying sows and boars. But they carry a bio-security threat if we incorporate them among our herds without observing them first.
Those are some of the bio-security measures that will help any farmer keep disease away from their farms. Also, never forget to keep praying to God to keep the disease away because at the end of the day, He is the protector.
NOTE:
WHATEVER U DO, KEEP PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR FARM!!!!!

SAJE ANIMAL FARM are the proud sellers of SAJE GROMIX PIG AND CHICKEN Feeds and Concentrates with outlets in Wakiso, Matugga, Luteete and Kalagi.
Hello Farmers! SAJE ANIMAL FARM is soon commencing a program that targets to offer market to our farmers looking to sell off their piglets in case they fail to find one or those that are looking for a more consistent and guaranteed market for their farm.
However, there are some conditions that a farmer will need to meet in order to qualify for this arrangement.
These include, but are not limited to;
• The piglets should be 2 months old, not below.
• They should weigh a minimum of 15kgs at this age.
• A farmer that's interested in selling their piglets to SAJE ANIMAL FARM should register at the closest company outlet as soon as the piglets are born so we can track them as well.
• The mother sow and boar should be available at the time of pickup. Piglets without especially a mother, shall not be taken as a precautionary bio-security measure.
• The SAJE inspector should be able to see and weigh the piglets at the time of pickup to confirm the required weight.
• Proper bio-data records of both the piglets, parent sow and boar should be available in a bid to avoid buying in**ed litters.
• Piglets should have been fed relevant SAJE Feeds at each given stage to the point of pickup. Unless otherwise advised by SAJE ANIMAL FARM.
• The farmer must be a consistent buyer of relevant feeds in their right quantities basing on the litter sizes. This will be determined by the registration outlet they went to. Receipts should be available at pickup time to this effect.
*We stress that ONLY SAJE ANIMAL FARM farmers qualify for this arrangement.
At SAJE ANIMAL FARM, We Make Your Farm Profitable.
Hello Poultry Farmers! Specifically Broiler farmers!
SAJE ANIMAL FARM has come bearing the best of news.
After intensive work from our Research and Development team, we have finally introduced a broiler nutrition line to our already robust SAJE PIGGERY feeding program to cater for one of Uganda's biggest farming sector, POULTRY.
This nutrition line, as hinted on earlier, is first focussed on Broilers with the R&D team still underway on the formulation of what we are sure will be one of the best Layer Diets in the country. We shall only introduce it when, and only when we're certain it's of a quality befitting of the SAJE brand. A quality that gives value for money.
The SAJE BROILER LINE, just like the PIGGERY line, is stage specific to ensure quality nutrition for the birds at the different stages.
To ensure these, we have provided;
SAJE PRE-STARTER CRUMBLE for birds from 0-7 days.
SAJE STARTER CRUMBLE for birds from 8-14 days.
SAJE GROWER PELLETS & BROILER GROMIX CONCENTRATE for birds between 15 days to Market.
These are top of the line products produced using the highest quality ingredients, the latest technologies and after intensive research to ensure that desirable kilos are achieved in the shortest period of time.
Pass by any of our outlets to get any of the SAJE ANIMAL FARM products. Both Piggery and Poultry.
And follow our page, SAJE PIGS for updates and articles about chicken and poultry farming.
Just like the SAJE PIGS GROMIX, the Chicken GROMIX is designed to give U the highest quality feeds to give you excellent weights in the shortest period of time.
We make your farm profitable.
Hello farmers!
We would like to inform all of you that the SAJE GROMIX Complete Mixed Feed is back in all our stores.
This is mostly owing to the poor quality of the cereal available on the market that farmers use with the SAJE GROMIX Concentrates and end up with substandard or low quality feeds upon mixing.
The quality of the cereal base (maize & bran) is just as important as the concentrate because if a farmer uses a cereal base of poor quality, then the feed will definitely be of poor quality.
Such cereal is either;
- Too old and thus molded and can easily make your pigs sick.
- Has preservatives in it to help keep it in storage longer and their smell isn't appeasing to the pigs so they end up refusing the feed.
- Has useless fillers as a way to increase the seller’s profit. Fillers such as the maize cobs (bikongoliro) which have negligible nutrient value and can especially be danger for starter pigs whose gut isn't developed enough to handle such coarse feed.
- With the broken pieces too big for pigs to digest as they’re usually not well chewed. This causes wastage as the undigested maize ends up in the dung anyway.
- e.t.c. (Visit the SAJE PIGS page for more on nutrition)
To combat this, we’ve decided to re-introduce the complete mixed feed especially at the Lactating/Breastfeeding, Creep and Starter/Weaner stages as they’re the most sensitive to nutrition errors that tend to affect the herd’s lifetime performance.
So please visit any of our outlets in Matugga, Kalagi, Luteete and Wakiso and get your complete mixed feed as well as all other SAJE GROMIX range of products.
We look forward to working with you as we strive to keep Making Your Farm Profitable.
