Food for thought,

Sole Trader / Small Scale Business.

I was asked 3 questions by another young man from KAMPALA UGANDA, who is running his small business.

1). As small businesses owner should I have a salary.

My answer is yes, if your business is to survive, you need to have a salary so that you can be able to separate capital and your personal up keeping. Most of small business owners take money randomly from the business anticipating that they will continue making sales, if there will be any slight shift in the business and experience poor income, it quickly collapse. So if one is depending on a salary, one will be able to see and evaluate his /her own business performance.

2). How should I determine the amount that I take as a salary.

My answer is your salary should be at least determined by the profit margin. You can't have a bigger salary that will consume all the capital. So it's important to understand your profit margin.

3). Should my salary come from Gross profit.

My answer is yes, your salary should be calculated from the gross profits. Salaries falls under company expenses. It is part of expenses such as rent, phone bills, stationary and consumables. If you will take anything from Net Profit, it's no longer salary but dividends.

There is no other way. For the business to survive, the owner must be on a salary. If there owner is to take random money from the business, there will be no measures on how much to take.

It is possible that in the first days of establishing the business, the owner might not take anything, instead the owner will be pumping in money rather then taking.

The question is, what if that is the only source of income that you have.

You are selling in the markets and you are supposed to buy food at the end of the day and you are forced to take from the business money.

This is my suggestion. Let's say you have 1million and that's all that you have. You invest it all in the business and for you to get your next meal, you need to take from that same money.

In that scenario, this is my advice.

It's better to loan a certain percentage of the money to your business. Use only a portion, let's say 600,000/= UGX and remain with 400,000 UGX for up keeping.

Loan the 600,000/= UGX to the business bearing in mind that as soon as you make your profit, you will pull out the loaned 600,000/= UGX and the remaining balance should be for business. It's no longer your money.

In the process of building your capital, you be depending on the 400,000/= UGX that you have put aside. This way it will help you not to randomly take from the business money.(operating capital)

Most business fail at the starting point because the owner will be consistently taking every small amount that comes in and use it.

Have you ever seen a problem where you can start a business with 1,000,000 UGX. Let's say you are into buying and selling. You order stuff costing 1Million and at the end of trading you fail even to return the initial capital you started with. It is because you will be chopping every cent as it comes.

Yes the starting point is always tough but if you start right, you will be successful.
