Welcome! We are so happy to have the addition somewhat finished for the “season of scoops.” While it is not completely finished, we have managed to get it open and pretty beautiful. Jacob educating on the popular questions about a nurse cow, bottle feeding, and keeping the calf with the mother. With our Holstein and Jersey milk cows, we normally try and keep the calves on the mom, even while we milk. But, sometimes we need to “graft” calves to a nurse cow, or keep them in the hutch and bottle feed for health reasons. Sometimes heifers (first time calver) and cows (more than one time calver), don’t easily take to their babies, and it’s safer for them and the calf to put them on a nurse cow, or bottle feed them until they are able to drink from a bucket. The calves will bottle feed, or graft to a nurse cow, until they can drink from a trough or bucket, with other calves about the same age and size. As you can see in the video, Laia our nurse cow, has a lot of milk coming in, and is a seasoned nurse cow. She has already taken well to this new jersey heifer that was born yesterday. It is not conventional or easy to keep the calves with the moms as long as possible, and until they wean, but we feel it creates a stronger bond, and the cows actually produce more milk. New mama, new baby! Meet our beautiful new addition to the farm! A colt (boy) born about 4 am last night. He is healthy, strong, and full of life. His mom is named Gin, and she is a red dun- and it looks like baby will look just like mom. Spring means new life, and here at the farm there is lots of new life! Our first Dutch belt calf was born in the middle of the night, on one of the coldest nights we have had. But, here she is doing amazing! We have made some changes over the last few months that reflect our baby calves staying with their mothers. In the past, we haven’t been able to do so, with milking twice a day to be able to ship our milk. Now that we are milking once a day, mothers are happier, and babies are able to stay with their moms for a long time to come. Some though, like this Dutch belt calf, the mothers just don’t take to the calf like we like, so we bottle feed them in the hutches. When they get a little older, we put them all together to run free! Haulin’ hay on this hot, beautiful day! ☀️🔥🌱🌾 This year in Star Valley has been a lot drier, and warmer than usual. Hay prices are higher than we have ever seen, and it makes for a stressful time for the farmers and ranchers in our area. We are grateful though for this way of life, and for being able to bale and grow some of our own hay. As for the rest of our hay, we buy from friends and haul it to our farm on many trips in a truck and trailer. Fresh Friday! Is that even a thing?😆 Well, if it’s not we are making it one! For the last 7 years we have practiced a grazing plan called mob or rotational grazing. This plan follows the natural practices of letting animals graze down one area before moving onto the next. When only letting cattle (or any animal) graze on one area for a certain amount of time-we change paddocks every 2-3 days- they are getting more nutrients and minerals, while fertilizing the soil for the next round. Instead of grazing to the nub of grass, we leave residue so the grass can then grow more efficiently and healthfully. It’s a win-win for all involved! As you can see, the babies are starting to eat some fresh grass as well.
