Aloha Oahu!
Group registration is now open for our next class Sensory Explorers! Each one hour class is led by two occupational therapists and starts with sensorimotor skills to improve body awareness, strength, postural control, and balance. Then we will move into a self regulation lesson to give kids the building blocks for strong emotional development and tools needed for self regulation. Each session will end in a fine motor activity or tactile exploration play to improve development of the tactile system as well as improve fine motor and visual motor skills necessary for classroom performance. This class is for kiddos ages 4-6. It takes place on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 PM 10/19-12/14 with one week off for thanksgiving. For questions or to register please visit our website Littlehonutherapy.com
Up next is the tactile system! What do you do when your child is resistive to wearing socks and shoes or any clothing with a seam or tag?!?!? Your local occupational therapists are able to help! Our holiday sensory exploration class will have tactile exploration tasks and activities to develop the tactile system. Link for our website is in our bio!
Let’s take a closer look at the visual system! Visual information is taken in through the eyes and interpreted by the brain. Sometimes the brain isn’t processing the information correctly which may show up as letter reversals, sensitivity to light, and difficulty distinguishing between similar numbers and letters. Swipe to see more signs of visual processing disorder.
There are 8 sensory systems taking information in from the environment and telling your body how to respond. Stay tuned to learn more about each sensory system and red flags to look for that indicate dysfunction in that area.
In our social skills group this week we learned the importance of sharing and being flexible! Our friends shared legos to create pictures. They were flexible when they ran out of the sizes and colors they needed and helped each other find more pieces if someone finished early! Sharing is caring and sharing can be fun too! Bonus skills we worked on include: fine motor skills, visual discrimination skills, visual perception, and visual motor integration. Learning through play at little honu therapy is so much fun!
Don’t forget to sign up for our classes if you were thinking about it! Registration closes tomorrow! Register online!!!!
What exactly does an OT do? We can do a lot!
When a child is having difficulty meeting developmental milestones, learning, socializing, processing sensory input, or completing self help skills, an OT looks at what may be impacting their performance. We then use therapeutic tasks and play to target these skills and promote development and independence. At little honu therapy you can choose a package of individualized sessions to meet your child’s specific needs or enroll in group classes to promote generalization of skills among same aged peers! If your child is having difficulty sharing, following rules, or playing with others, they may benefit from some additional support! We are noticing kids needing increased support with social skills likely due to covid. In order to support kids who are having difficulty with social skills, we put together a social skills group class at little honu therapy. Check out our website and register your little ones today.
