Here's an excerpt of the latter portion of the address by the Closed Banquet guest speaker, the Reverend Dr. Howard-John Wesley, 78th Laurel Wreath Laureate:

"...I was at the airport, and a white lady asked me if I was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. I responded, 'no, I am not.' The Nupes with me were surprised by my reply. I said to her, 'I'm not a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, I'm a 'brother' of Kappa Alpha Psi!' This is not membership--this isn't a country club that you join, this isn't a gym that you belong to; this isn't even a church that you attend on Easter and Christmas. But this is a brotherhood where we look out for one another...where we care for one another...that we provide opportunities for each other...that we stop and help one another. This is a brotherhood and I came to Tampa tonight to find some men in this room who can declare: 'I take this brotherhood seriously! This ain't just extra-curricular, this ain't just something on my resume, I take being a Kappa seriously! This is serious business for me to look after my brothers in Kappa...Alpha...Psi!!
