Today, 2 of our former dispatchers were sworn in as City of Akron police officers! Congratulations and stay safe out there!
The nationwide 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline goes LIVE on July 16. Ohioans experiencing suicidal crisis, mental health or addiction-related distress will soon be able to call 988 to access free, 24/7, confidential support for themselves or loved ones.
On Wednesday, a handful of our technicians, who were hired after the pandemic started, were treated to tours of fire station 2 and fire station 4! Judging by the big smiles in the pictures and the rave reviews, the tours were a big hit!
This is an important part of training, especially during fire dispatch training. Our technicians are able to see the trucks, learn what each truck does, and why they are sent out on certain calls. Thank you to station 2 and station 4 and our own District Chief Poletta for the tours!
Our newest hire class completed their classroom training last Friday! Over the last 6 weeks, they received their certifications in CPR and Emergency Medical Dispatch, completed APCO's 40-hour telecommunicator course, learned all about CAD (computer aided dispatch), vesta phones, how to enter calls, how to code calls, the workings of the police and fire departments, the workings of the communications center, geography of Akron, stress management, and many other tools and techniques needed for the job! They also attended the Akron Police Memorial Services where we showed our support to the department and the families of fallen officers, as well as learned how important it is to do our jobs 100%, 100% of the time.
We would like to extend our extreme gratitude to the Akron Fire Department Training Academy for the use of their facility for our training and treating us so well for the 6 weeks that we were there! We would also like to thank the Akron Police Training Academy for the use of their facility and welcoming us with open arms. Their training of our new hires in making split second decisions is something that I think they will carry throughout their 911 careers!
Congratulations to our 8 trainees who started their shifts on the floor this week. You all did amazing jobs while in classroom and we cannot wait to see you do amazing things over the next few months of training!
If you or anyone you know is interested in law enforcement, this is the place to be and this is the chief to work for!
Another round of promotions, this time for the police department! Congratulations to all!
Congratulations to all! And a special congratulations to Captain Lash who started in dispatch and rose through the ranks and made history along the way! Couldn’t be more proud!

In addition to all of the festivities for National Telecommunicators Week, we had a busy week! We had mass casualty training at Infocision Stadium, attended a recruiting event at the John S Knight Center, 4 of our technicians attended the 2022 Ohio APCO/NENA Conference, and several of our technicians attended the 2022 Ohio Gold Star Awards where we were recognized for 3 out of the 5 categories that we were nominated for (more on this later!).
Another Telecommunicator Week in the books! Theme week was a big success, especially twin day!
April 10th-16th is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.
This week, sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International and celebrated annually, honors the thousands of men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world’s citizens.
We want to take this opportunity to thank the dispatchers at the City of Akron Public Safety Communications and dispatchers everywhere, that answer the difficult calls.
We are kicking off our Telecommunicators Week celebrations with THEME WEEK! Sunday was "Halloween in April" Day! Dispatcher Tasha, the coolest cat and kitten ever, brought her "A game"!
Happy National Telecommunicators Week to all 52 of our dispatchers, and to all of our dispatch brothers and sisters! They truly ARE the unsung heroes on the other end of the line! We have several things planned for our center throughout the week! Pictures to come!
