Knowing what kind of hearth already lives in your home can narrow down your options when upgrading your fireplace. Anything that must be mortared together is considered masonry. Since it is built by hand, no two masonry fireplaces are exactly alike. While Zero-Clearance fireplaces are pre-manufactured metal fireboxes with metal flue pipe.

An easy way to test is to knock on the back or side walls of your fireplace — sounds like rock or brick? It is probably masonry (Heritage, Normandy, Thin-Line, Celebrity, Cameo, Laser and Reserve doors). Does it have a hollow ring to it? It is most likely Zero Clearance (Z-Heritage, Z-Door, Special Z, Z Laser, or Thin-Line Z doors).
