I was challenged a few years ago to make a bunch of trucker/biker wallets for a motorcycle shop. To me, this seemed to be a simple task and build for his shop and our product line. However, there was one catch; he indicated he wanted the specific chain to be stainless and welded rather than a pressed-together chain. He stated that most bikers would look at his current wallets and find that the chains were not welded and would walk away without purchasing. He said that most bikers or truckers want it built this way because the chains are prone to breaking apart from the abuse of a trucker's seat to the thrashing on wear from riding a bike. Regardless, with this quest in mind, it took over six months of searching and calling to finally find an American-made chain in 403 stainless steel with the specific gauge he wanted. After completing the exhausting task of finally designing and making the first run, I presented it to him, and he smiled and admired that I had pulled it off. As I look back on this journey, it is one thing to make a quick buck and sell a cheap product. I have made over a thousand of these Ithaca bags to date. This past week, I received this bag from a customer who purchased it five years ago and sent it to us to see if we could repair a damaged zipper. I replaced the zipper and added new Chicago screws, handles, d-rings, a new zipper pocket, and a tassel. To me, this fulfilled a small dream of mine. Many years ago, I met the owner of a leather shop in Lower Manhattan and admired the products he made. Older in age, I asked for wisdom and how he was so successful. He told me to create my own patterns and be able to take returns from customers and make them better than before. I asked why would you do this? He pointed to the messenger bags on the top shelf and said those bags were from customers who traded their old, tired ones at a discount in trade for new ones. He then would take the old worn bags apart and add new zippers, new hardware, and new buckles. After repairing and adding the new shiny hardware, he would sell them for more than one with new material. He stated that he sold out them quickly, being customers love the patina and worn look. I learned an important lesson from that older gentleman, and today, after many years, I can proudly show my own pattern with a prized patina. Beasley & Company “ Bent, Never Broken” 🇺🇸
