For far too long, fat communities have been left out of conversations about healthcare–there’s a lot of talk about us, but mostly without us. But the tide is shifting. We are delighted to share that NAAFA’s Executive Director, Tigress Osborn, has been named a 2024 TIME100 Health honoree. Check out the feature: naafa.org/TIME100
Join us in celebrating Tigress’s historic inclusion in the 2024 TIME100 Health list – we are so proud of you, Tigress!

For Autism ACCEPTANCE Month coming up! It'll be reposted a lot too like my Halloween graphic was.
This isn't the place to proclaim your love of the puzzle piece. The puzzle piece began as an image depicting a crying child. And, big surprise, a MAJORITY of Autistics don't want to be compared to crying children (Insert shocked Pikachu face meme here). If you are a fan of it, keep it to yourself as it's actually triggering to many. Especially when it's symbolic of Autism $peaks, a hate group that makes money for... ready? Neurotypicals. Us Autistics don't benefit. They stick us in ABA thinking they can turn butterflies into moths, frogs into toads, etc. Keep the internal ableism out of my comment section. I do allow non Autistics here for education. Speaking over us gets you a block. Listen and learn to what the MAJORITY of Autistics have been saying for years. And again, if you prefer all of that for yourself despite harmful history, that's your choice. Nobody will force you to use different terminology. But please keep it out of my comment section unless you have genuine questions.
Photo Description: Background that's gradient red on top, purple, green on bottom. On top a crow named Rye is saying, "I'm aware that you exist. Let me profit off you." There is blue text that says, "Awareness". He's standing in front of red, yellow, green, and blue puzzle pieces. The autistic barn owl he's speaking to, Cupcake, is not impressed.
Next Rye instead says, "I accept that you exist and want to help normalize accommodations and inclusiveness." In red text says, "Acceptance". He's standing in front of a gold infinity. Cupcake is happy her friend gets it.
Research presented at the American Heart Association conference last week found that following a time restricted diet (eating all meals in an 8-hour window) was associated with 91% increased risk of dying from heart disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Intermittent fasting was also associated with a decrease in lean muscle mass (a finding that replicates previous results of a trial). Loss of lean muscle mass—a concern also noted in the use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss—may be an underlying factor in the association, and has previously been linked with increased risk of death, including from cardiovascular disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of course, correlation does not equal causation so we should use the same caution here that we would in interpreting any correlational and observational research. But the way that I’ve seen shade thrown at this study for using a correlational design—the same design most of the “it’s bad to be fat” research relies on—highlights the higher standard that studies that go against the diet culture narrative are held to.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How many times have we heard that intermittent fasting is an absolute MIRACLE for a variety of health ailments and amazing for weight loss?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And before that it was multiple weight loss drugs that were miraculous (looking at you Belviq) only to find out those drugs actually increased risk of cancer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Weight Watchers, low carb, high carb, Atkins, Fen-phen, Paleo, Keto, now GLP-1’s, etc, each with the promise to fix it ALL. But the truth is that there are no magical solutions and we hate the diet industry for preying on people’s insecurities and stealing our time, money, and energy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all deserve SO MUCH MORE than a lifetime trying to change our bodies.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You may have heard the idea that eating disorders are often competitive. That those with ED compare themselves to others and try to be "more ill" as a result.
This often leads to the narrative that eating disorders are inherently competitive and that is it an innate aspect of the experience.
Under our capitalistic system, I strongly question this assumption. There are many ways the capitalistic values of our society can perpetuate the "competitive" nature of EDs.
One such way is by commodifying care, support, and treatment, creating scarcity and leading to gatekeeping.
Because support is limited, people now need to "earn" support by being the most "worthy" of support.
Treatment is often only offered to those with:
- The lowest BMIs (hello fatphobia)
- The most financial access (oh hi, classism)
- The most "typical" or "straightforward" presentations (oh hey, transphobia, racism, ableism, sanism, etc.)
In this context, it makes so much sense that those with eating challenges would feel the need to "compete" for care.
And I am angry. Because anyone who struggles deserves to be supported. Full stop.
This always draws out the trolls, but it needs to be said. As a human being, you have the right to take up the space your body needs, whether it be at the gym, at work, at school, or at home. You are not too much.
