🍁🍂 Fall is about to slam us with a whirlwind of activity! 🍂 🍁
From PAD Awareness Month to Sonography Month, to Diabetes Awareness Month—and let’s not forget health fairs, 🏃♂️5Ks, and 🦃holidays—we’re all feeling the pressure. Here at LACVT and Diabetes Relief of Louisiana, we know how easy it is to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. But it’s important to remember that managing stress is crucial for your cardiovascular health. ❤️
How Stress Affects Your Heart:
✅ Increases Blood Pressure: When you're stressed, your body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can cause your blood pressure to spike. Over time, chronic high blood pressure can damage your arteries and lead to heart disease.
✅ Triggers Inflammation: Chronic stress can lead to inflammation in the blood vessels, which is a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis (the buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries).
✅ Affects Heart Rhythm: Stress can also trigger irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), increasing the risk of stroke and other heart-related issues.
✅ Promotes Unhealthy Habits: When stressed, people often turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating, smoking, or skipping exercise—all of which can negatively impact heart health.
Tips to Manage Stress:
☑️ Practice Mindfulness: Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breathing and clear your mind.
☑️ Stay Active: Regular physical activity helps reduce stress and keeps your heart strong.
☑️ Prioritize Sleep: A good night’s rest is essential for managing stress and maintaining heart health.
☑️ Connect with Loved Ones: Spending time with family and friends can help you feel supported and less stressed.
As we navigate this busy season together, let’s all take steps to keep our hearts healthy and our stress in check. After all, a healthy heart is key to enjoying all the excitement that fall brings! 🍂🍁

Enhancing Peripheral Artery Disease Care for Medicaid Patients Dr. Gary Jones, a cardiovascular surgeon at Louisiana Cardiovascular & Thoracic Institute (LACVT), has been practicing in Alexandria, LA for 35 years. Throughout his career, he has always prioritized providing care to the Medicaid population, strongly believing that everyone deserves access to high-quality healthcare, especially those insured by Medicaid. However, he has observed that many Louisianians with Medicaid insurance are slipping through the cracks when it comes to Peripheral Artery Disease. To address this issue, Dr. Jones created the KEEP LOUISIANA WALKING healthcare initiative, which aims to promote awareness, education, early detection, and early intervention of PAD. He emphasizes the importance of preventive care, focusing on educating Louisianians in the prevention & management of this disease. By promoting early detection and intervention, patient outcomes can be significantly improved. His goal is to make medical care for PAD more accessible and comprehensive for Medicaid patients, ensuring they receive the necessary care without unnecessary barriers. Recently, Dr. Jones discussed his concerns and his KEEP LOUISIANA WALKING initiative with Dr. Stewart T. Gordon, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Amy Himel, Senior Medical Director of Louisiana Healthcare Connections. During their video meeting, they explored strategies to improve care for Medicaid patients and ensure that no one slips through the cracks. One of the unique aspects of Dr. Jones’s practice is that patients can receive screening, diagnosis, and treatment for PAD all under one roof at LACVT. The institute features its own vascular sonography department, which is crucial for the early detection of PAD. Additionally, LACVT has a specialized wound care department dedicated to treating wounds caused by peripheral artery disease and diabetes. This integrated approach simplifies the healthcare journey for patients, allowing them
