Why does Havegard Birdseed carry bathouses?

The truth is, bats benefit every ecosystem they live in! Some bats are pollinators, some disperse seeds to maintain plants and forests, many birds of prey and mamals depend on bats for food, and some bats eat only insects which is worth $3.7billion in the US worth in pest control every year.

A single bat usually consumes 6,000-8,000 insects every night. One standard bat house can inhabit 60 bats at a time. In the winter some bats migrate to find a more insect rich environment, others will hybrinate. During hybrination a bat's heart rate will go from 200-300 beats per minute to 10. They can also go minutes without taking a breath, and their body temp can drop to near freezing.

The board under a Suet feeder is called a "tail prop", woodpeckers especially prefer tail props so they can perch comfortably while eating. This type of feeder will attract your larger woodpeckers such as, Flickers, Red Bellied, and Pileated Woodpeckers.

Is a bird bath actually useful?

A bird bath can actually attract a wider variety of birds in your yard, especially in the winter. Birds use water to drink and bathe. If any animal is forced to eat snow for water, that cold will force their body temperature down to melt the snow. They must consume a lot of snow to equal the small amount of water needed. Birds also need to keep their feathers clean and free of matting for flight and insulation. Birds must still bathe all winter to stay alive.

Fun Farm Fact: What to do with your after Halloween? Turn it into a bird feeder! Cut out the carved part and fill your pumpkin with birdseed. You can set it on the ground or hang it from a tree with several lengths of thick twine or rope wrapped under the base!
