Without support from her family, she had nowhere to go and was desperate to find a way to provide basic human needs for herself and her baby. After beginning her stay at the Sixth Street Shelter, she was able to support herself and her children, and now owns two successful businesses. After someone close to her betrayed her trust, Heidy and her children had to find somewhere to go. During her 18 month stay at Sixth Street Shelter, Heidy was able to go to school and work to support herself. For the last five years, she has owned her own cleaning business and in addition, owns and rents out property in Allentown. The shelter empowered her to move forward with her life, and Heidy is grateful that her kids witnessed this experience, so they’ll know that when life knocks you down, the only thing you can do is get back up again. Jacqueline was a victim of domestic violence when she suddenly fell ill – with no support from her family, she had nowhere to turn to, but knew she needed to escape. Luckily, Sixth Street Shelter was ready to provide her with everything she needed to be successful. Enrolling her in a 2 year college program and setting up a savings account, the Turner program gave Jacqueline the tools she needed to move forward. After taking the Shelter’s courses on financial literacy and nutrition, she was able to graduate from the program and purchase her first home.
