Videos by ISR Central Iowa in Ankeny. At Infant Swimming Resource, we give children as young as 6 months old the skills they would need to save their own lives if the need were to arise.
After two non fatal drownings in town yesterday, the news was talking water safety today. I know survival swim lessons aren’t an option for everyone but we need to ensure everyone knows that no child is drown proof and there are multiple layers of protection. (there are grants & scholarships available if finances are the barrier!) 1. Effective adult supervision 2. Barriers (pool fence, alarms, covers, door locks, etc) 3. Survival swim skills 4. Use a coast guard approved life vest on vessels and in natural bodies of water (NOT pools) 5. Know CPR Thank you Roger Riley and WHO 13 News for helping bring water safety to Des Moines 🩵
My youngest daughter! She first did ISR in 2021 and then another session in 2022. She has cried at every lesson with her other two instructors and me 🤪 but this week she turned a corner and absolutely loves it! Ultimately, I didn’t care if my daughter liked the water or not. If she hated it, then she would be safer anyway. But she loves it now and I could barely sleep because I was so excited and full of joy after our pool day this week. She is safe, confident, and so proud of herself! To all the parents who wonder if ISR will make their kid hate the water…our goal isn’t to make them love it. The goal is aquatic safety and children who can self rescue if needed. They learn the reality of water. They may prefer to play in the water and not work in the water. So maybe pool time will be sitting on the steps or in moms arms while splashing. The time will come when they decide they want to swim and enjoy the water.
“Do you just throw the kids in?” Of course not! We begin teaching the skills one by one. Here is a quick glimpse at day 1! As the kids grow their skills, they grow their confidence and competence in the water! It is a process but so worth the dedication to have aquatic survival skills in 5-7 weeks. #ISRCentralIowa #InfantSwimmingResource #ISR #DrowningPrevention #DrowningAwareness #SurvivalSkills #BrainInjuryAwareness #RunForrestRun #ForrestsFight
May is drowning awareness month. Friends, I can never fully articulate how important it is to acknowledge that it COULD happen to YOUR child. It can. It happens every day. It happens to adoptive parents like us, who then get accused of abuse. It happens to professional football players, Olympic skiers, country music artists, doctors, SAHMs, the wealthy and the poor…drowning doesn’t discriminate and trust me, your supervision fails daily so don’t put the pressure on yourself to be the only thing preventing it from happening. Hold tight Forrest, you’re slowly coming back to lifeI’ll be keeping your head up 🖤 #ISRCentralIowa #Infantswimmingresource #drowningprevention #drowningawareness #braininjuryawareness #RunForrestRun #ForrestsFight
I love it…watching her find air in clothes 👏🏼 this may look “easy” or “natural” but this sweet girl worked hard over 6.5 weeks to learn how to find air from various prompts and maintain a float. If babies instinctively knew how to do this, my son wouldn’t have a brain injury from a non-fatal drowning. Effective supervision is essential but it fails often—we are human and our attention is split between children and other tasks. Pool covers, fences, alarms are great layers of protection as well. Survival swim skills are an added layer of protection against an aquatic accident. Drownings happen daily and it’s always sometime I thought would never happen to us until it did. Take preventative measures moms & dads. It’s so so so important. #ISRCentralIowa #InfantSwimmingResource #DrowningPrevention #DrowningAwareness #ForrestsFight #RunForrestRun
Look at her now! 🌟 We went from clinging and wanting to do count downs of how many swims we had left to being a little mermaid swimming, jumping in, floating, and showing us all she can do! ISR is a big commitment but the growth within approx 6 weeks is huge. Not only do the children learn aquatic survival skills but they also learn that they can do hard things, they are capable, they are brave and strong, they can face fears and they can trust in their abilities. These are huge in building a healthy self-esteem!
Why is the float so essential? As you can see here, this girlie tried to grab the wall to climb up the ladder but missed. Instead of panicking and treading water to try to continue grabbing at the wall…she confidently went back to her float and got the wall at a different spot. This also shows the importance of an eyes open swim to continue evaluating her surroundings! #Float #SurvivalSwim #InfantSwimmingResource #ISR #DrowningPrevention #DrowningAwareness #NotOneMoreChildDrowns #ForrestsFight #RunForrestRun
