"According to the American Psychiatric Association, Black clinicians represent only about 2% of practicing psychiatrists and 4% of psychologists providing care." - Erica Richards, MD, PhD, Psychiatric Times .
As comes to an end, these statistics continue to cross my mind daily. I am thankful for the paths I have crossed that allowed me to become one of the 2%. It is our duty to reach back and bring the younger generations with us as we push forward! 💪🏾💙
I am thankful for the college students and their families daily. I am changed forever because of the experience. And who knows, maybe their generation will shock the system and help increase the number of Black psychiatrists.
Lastly, thank you to everyone for your support of The College Psychiatrist. There is so much more in store, and I can't do it without you. Let's continue to break the stigma!
Repetition is the key to mastery, especially when it comes to nurturing your mental health. The more you prioritize self-care, seek support, and practice resilience, the easier it becomes to navigate life's challenges. Today let's celebrate love in all its forms—including the love we show ourselves. Happy Valentine's Day, from all of us here at The College Psychiatrist! 🌹💘
We had a such great time meeting and hanging out with students of the University of North Texas for Market Day last week. 🦅☺️
Watch out, TCP is coming to a college or universities near you soon!
Some patients have asked me my thoughts about writing down yearly reflections and resolutions for the upcoming year.
Here’s my take- I would encourage you to write -something- down in regard to your year. Even if it’s 5 bullet points. Physically writing things down will help make sense of what’s going on in your life (or maybe your head) and allow you to retroactively put things together, into perspective, and make things make sense.
But, nobody said you can’t have fun while doing it! Maybe you’ll put your thoughts into a bullet journal or paint the words/phrases onto a nice canvas. ‘Tis the season to be creative and explore!
How are you preparing for 2024 and what’s to come? 💙

A year ago today, I graduated from the Black In Business (BIB) program with ~150 of my sisters from across the nation. The timing is not lost on me as I also just celebrated one year of The College Psychiatrist (TCP) being in existence this past October.
The Black In Business program was designed to help Black women create, grow, and scale small businesses and I’m proud to say that TCP is still here!
✨ Our team is growing.
✨ We’re licensed in more states meaning more students are getting access to mental healthcare.
✨ We’ve launched a product.
✨ We’ve done media appearances.
The list goes on!
As I shared last year, I’m thankful for all of my mentors in both medicine and business, my business advisor, presenters, the entire Goldman BIB and ICIC Team, and all of my classmates.
If I could say anything to the current cohort members I would say I am so proud of you and all you have accomplished over the last year. You inspire me. Keep it up! 💙
Remember: Colleges are still in the middle of a period often referred to as "The Red Zone."
The Red Zone lasts from the beginning of the fall semester and continues through the Thanksgiving holiday. This time period is crucial for college safety and awareness, because this period of time is when campuses see and receive a surge in reported s*xual assaults.
Remember to be an advocate for yourself, and for others, if you know someone that needs help. It is not your fault and you deserve to feel safe as you attain your collegiate goals.
Thank you again to for the continued awareness.
Remember, consent is s*xy and safety matters. We are here for you, always. 💙
College is a time of exploration, growth, and self-discovery, including in the realm of s*xuality. As you navigate this exciting chapter of your life, it's crucial to prioritize your own boundaries and ensure that every s*xual experience is consensual, pleasurable, and empowering. Let's dive into the importance of boundary-setting and how it can shape your college s*xual journey.
🚫 Firm but Friendly: Boundaries are your personal limits, desires, and comfort zones when it comes to s*xual intimacy. They serve as essential guides to ensure that your needs are respected and that you engage in consensual encounters. Remember, it's okay to say "no" or set limits at any point. Your boundaries matter, and they deserve to be honored.
💕 Pleasure and Consent: Understanding your boundaries not only safeguards your well-being but also paves the way for pleasurable and fulfilling s*xual experiences. By communicating your desires, actively seeking enthusiastic consent, and respecting the boundaries of your partner(s), you create a space where everyone can explore their s*xuality with respect, joy, and mutual pleasure.
Ready to embark on a journey of s*xual empowerment and knowledge? We've got you covered! Download our free PDF guide, specially crafted for college students like you, which delves into all things consensual and pleasurable s*x. This comprehensive resource covers topics such as consent, communication, s*xual health, and more—empowering you to make informed choices and foster healthy relationships.
Visit our website (link in bio) to download your free copy of the PDF guide today.
College is a transformative phase of life where students embark on a journey of self-discovery, navigating new experiences and shaping their identities. As a young adult, it's natural to question and explore your s*xuality and s*xual orientation during this pivotal time.
TCP recognizes the significance of providing a supportive and inclusive space for these discussions. We believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and respected for who they are. 💯
It's also important to acknowledge that s*xuality can be fluid, and individual experiences may evolve and change over time. We want you to know that it's absolutely okay to question, explore, and embrace your authentic self. Your unique journey is valid and deserving of love and support.
If you find yourself navigating these questions, we encourage you to consider engaging in conversations with a counselor or mental health professional. They can provide guidance, resources, and a safe space to explore your feelings and emotions. We also encourage you to check out our previous PRIDE month posts or to download our free guide on our website for ways to help you come out to your parents, should that be something that’s on your mind.
Remember, your journey is a personal one. Trust yourself, be patient with the process, and surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, mentors, and professionals who will uplift and affirm your experiences. We’re here to help and are rooting for you always. 💙
Whether you had a 504 or IEP in high school, it's important to know that these accommodations don't automatically transfer to college. But we also know and recognize that just because you're in a new environment, it doesn't mean your learning needs disappear. 💯
➡️ We strongly recommend connecting with the Office of Student Services or Office of Student Abilities (or a similar department) within the first few weeks of being on your new campus to obtain accommodations for your classes.
Need to know more? Download our free PDF on our website today (DM us “PDF”) for more tips and tricks to help you succeed in college.
And remember, accommodations may need to be re-applied for each semester or school year, so it's important to stay informed and proactive. We’re here to support you and be in your corner!
College can be an exciting and transformative time, but it can also come with its own set of challenges and stressors. At The College Psychiatrist, we can't stress enough how important it is to prioritize your mental health during these years.
As college students, we know you face a unique set of pressures, from academic demands to social expectations. These challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, but seeking help for mental health concerns can make all the difference.
By taking care of your mental health, you can improve your overall well-being, increase your academic success, and enhance your relationships with others. Don't hesitate to seek support if you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or any other mental health concerns.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and taking care of your mental health is an essential part of achieving your goals and living a fulfilling life.
We have a team that’s ready to support you in your journey and be with you as you take the necessary steps toward flourishing in college and beyond. Be sure to visit our website (link in bio) to learn more about our team and to schedule your initial consultation. We are all rooting for you and will always be in your corner. 💙
PS: Throughout the month of July we’ll be talking about mental health care at college so make sure to share our content with a college student/parent you know!
Although PRIDE Month may be coming to a close, we at The College Psychiatrist want to remind you that we celebrate our q***r patients all year long. We believe that every individual deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported, regardless of their s*xual orientation or gender identity.
For any college students who may be struggling with coming out to their parents, we want you to know that you are not alone. It can be a difficult and emotional journey, but we are here to support you every step of the way.
To help guide you through this process, our free PDF will remain on our website. It provides helpful resources and recommendations for coming out to parents or loved ones. 🏳️🌈
Remember, your identity is valid and deserving of respect and love. We are proud to support all of our students, and we look forward to continuing to create an inclusive and welcoming community for everyone.
Always in your corner,
The College Psychiatrist team
