Up lights are a creative way to illuminate objects such as trees, plants, architectural elements, and foliage with focused, direct beams of light.

Lights are installed at the ground level of the building or tree and pointed to shine upwards. Then LEDs give off a bright but soft light that enhances the beauty of the object it is illuminating by making it the focal point of the area and helping that object draw the attention it deserves.

This curved rail at the Embassy of Finland is lit with a grazing effect that creates a gradation of light more intense at the base and slowly fading as it reaches the top.

Linear LED fixtures at the base of each section achieve this dramatic effect.

For a quick retrofit, we added an additional layer of light to this pergola.

Low voltage wiring is much easier to hid than 120v wiring, which would need a surface-mounted junction box and conduit.

The antique bronze finish of this low, round fixture, works well on a rustic stone wall, bringing out the varied colors of the stone, and adding to the feeling of durability and timelessness.

A quick way to light steps, that can be added after the steps are in place.

One fixture can light 3-4 steps, reducing the number of interruptions to the beauty of the stone.

Aged solid bronze. Complements any stonework, drawing out the brown tones and irregularities that make stone so interesting and timeless.

These fixtures throw lots of light forward, across the step, preventing light from shining directly into your eyes as you ascend the steps.

The unintentional light from the neighbor's yard, backlighting the fence, demonstrates how important it is to tie your lighting design together.

Trees in winter. This is when we appreciate branch structure. Lighting from the side, or lighting parts of the tree, rather than a complete wash....what you leave out adds interest.

Gasoline lawn mowers, blowers, and landscaping equipment have been the industry standard for many years. These tools have been highly effective in installation and maintenance but leave much to be desired from an environmental standpoint. “In 2011, engineers at the car company Edmunds estimated that driving a Ford F-150 Raptor truck from Texas to Alaska would emit the same amount of air pollution as a mere half-hour of yard work with a two-stroke, gas-powered leaf blower”*. Over the last 10 years dramatic improvements in technology have made electric landscape maintenance viable and localities have introduced legislation mandating its adoption.

Joan McIntyre will discuss how local policy and requirements may change in the near to medium term requiring the adoption of this equipment and how to plan and design with these possible changes in mind. Joan is a former member of the board of directors of EcoAction Arlington, and chairs the Climate Change, Energy and Environment Commission in Arlington County. She is also a master gardener. Following Joan’s talk, we will hear from the owners of two landscape contracting companies that are leading the way on offering all electric landscape maintenance services.

Zack Kline, founder of A.I.R. - Natural, Organic Land Care Company. A.I.R provides exclusively electric powered maintenance services as well as automated mowing. Zack will discuss the pros and cons of solely providing electric maintenance services.

Fred Peratt, Owner of Environmental Enhancements. Environmental Enhancements offers both conventional and electric landscape maintenance services. Fred will discuss challenges and opportunities associated with transitioning from conventional equipment to electric in both residential and commercial settings.

One of the ways to create a beautiful and comfortable outdoor living area is to light the home's hardscape.

It adds ambiance and atmosphere and showcases the architectural features of your outdoor spaces.

Patinaed copper boxes, mounted at eye level and flanking the doorway, complement the rustic architecture of the writer’s shed, while also lighting the steps below.

This project features uplighting and canopy lighting in a large residential estate in Potomac Maryland.

The design highlights the beautiful leaves, branch structure, and canopy of woodland oak trees ranging from 80 to 150 ft in height, creating a spectacular view from the patio, porch, and dining room of the home.

These spectacular effects are achieved using high power low voltage fixtures capable of delivering up to 5000 lumens. This combination of technology and design works well in large estate and commercial projects.

The "side yard" is often the most underutilized space in the garden.

The grill was directly outside the kitchen door, but with the HVAC nearby, this couldn’t be considered an entertaining space.

A dramatic, but softly-lit screen obscures an eyesore, transforms it into the most interesting focal point in the landscape, and brings the party to the grill.
