In case you're wondering... on October 24,25,26 between the hours of 6pm-10pm, regional Fire/EMS departments will be conducting search and rescue training in the area of Roosevelt Island. You may see rescue apparatus and searchlights in the area, sirens will not be used.

From October 20 to October 22, 2023, Virginia will be having sales tax holiday. During this period, you can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, hurricane and emergency preparedness supplies, and certain ENERGY STAR™ and WaterSense™ products without paying state sales tax.

Here are some emergency preparedness items that are eligible for the sales tax holiday:

- Portable generators – $1,000 or less per item
- Gas-powered chainsaws – $350 or less per item
- Chainsaw accessories – $60 or less per item
- Other specified hurricane preparedness products – $60 or less per item

This is a great opportunity to stock up on essential items without having to pay any sales tax. You can shop online, in-store, by mail or phone. Don't miss out on this chance to save some money!

IMPORTANT: On Wednesday, October 4th at 2:20 p.m. ET, there will be a nationwide emergency alert test on cell phones, wireless devices, radios, and TVs.

This is a standard test that occurs at least once every three years. No action is needed.

CERTCON 2023 will take place Saturday October 21 and Sunday October 22 at the University of the District of Columbia. This year's theme is "Community Ready: Neighbors Helping Neighbors." It will feature presentations for both the general public and volunteer responders such as CERTs. You and your family, friends, work colleagues, and neighbors are all invited. Please spread the word! On this day, we remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and honor the lives lost. We also pay tribute to the brave first responders who risked their lives to save others. The events of that day changed our nation forever, but we emerged stronger and more united.

As CERT, we are committed to helping communities prepare for and recover from disasters. We encourage everyone to take steps to be prepared for emergencies and to support each other in times of need.

Yesterday, CERT Basic Training started with 30 students enrolled. We're excited to see our community members taking the initiative to be prepared for emergencies.👍🏼

September is National Preparedness Month, and this year's theme is focused on helping older adults prepare for disaster. According to FEMA, older adults are more vulnerable after disasters due to factors such as chronic conditions, reliance on assistive devices, and social isolation.
