Due to anticipated high temperatures, the Athens Community Center is being designated as an emergency cooling station beginning June 17 through June 23 during regular hours. People needing to get out of the heat may use the lobby areas while the center is open.

​Hours of Operation are:

Monday-Friday: 6:00 am - 8:00 pm

Saturday: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Sunday: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Two Week Look Ahead for the West Union Street Improvements Project

Shelly & Sands crews will continue working on West Union St. construction as follows for the next two weeks:
Continue installation of new curb on Herrold Ave. and West Union St.
Begin work on new sidewalks from the fairgrounds and going west towards Herrold Ave.
Begin paving Herrold Ave. and West Union St.
Continue the excavation and fill to prepare for paving the connector to the multiuse path from the existing bike path to the Habitat for Humanity Restore Building
Begin to pour concrete drives and entrances to the businesses on West Union St.

Access to all business locations remain open with stone drives placed for access.

Please use caution in the work zone. One way traffic on West Union St. from the bridge to the hospital entrance, and two-way traffic from the hospital entrance to Shafer St. One way traffic on Herrold Ave.

The Ohio Traffic Safety Office will be holding an Advanced Driver Training course at Nelsonville-York High School June 8th and 9th, 2024.

Advanced Driver Training is a specially designed skills program that addresses the leading causes of teen crashes. Teen drivers can get hands-on instruction in crash avoidance techniques on a closed course, sometimes in their own vehicle. Programs vary at each school, but typically students will practice skid recovery, anti-lock braking system (ABS) stop exercises, slalom drills, and more. Teens must have a valid driving permit before attending.

From May 20th, 2024 through June 2nd, 2024 the Athens Police Department will be partnering with Law Enforcement Nationwide for the annual Click It or Ticket campaign. This campaign is a national high visibility enforcement period that focuses on the consequences of not wearing a seat belt while urging riders to always buckle up.
