I love sales and I am good at it. I read a lot of sales books and wanted to shout out Ronnell Richards for his book “Shut the hell up and sell”

One of the stories he shared triggered a similar experience I had earlier in my sales career.

In the late 90’s I had moved to Atlanta from Montreal, yes Canada. It was a bit of a culture shock. I was not use to the accents especially the southern accents. People also pointed out that I had an accent. When you are young and you have travelled and lived in different places you adapt.

Working in inside sales in my 20’s in challenging environments to make the job fun, I started doing different accents, Boston, New York, Southern. I have always been a comedian.

I put a southern accent on for a customer In Alabama and did not really think anything of it. Remember we are on the phone and LinkedIn did not exist. We built a rapport and started doing more business. I had to be someone I was not. It was stressful, exhausting more work and not fun.

I learned a valuable lesson in my 20’s be yourself. I will tell you more people were intrigued with me being a Canadian who grew up playing hockey.

I have been a home owner going on 20 years, and including the many years I rented and lived with my parents. I have seen well over 100 plumbers and none of them where women.

How many women plumbers have come to your home for a service call?

We need to do better.
