“Let me just talk for myself,” says Sharia Stripling. In her ideal world, Stripling wishes everyone knew American Sign Language (ASL). From Fort Valley, Georgia, south of Macon, the 33-year-old started her advocacy journey in high school and shares how she wishes to inspire the next genereation through her advocacy with GCDD. G for Georgia: Johns Creek
Hellooooo Georgia! It’s me again, Justin, your tour guide! Our next stop on our virtual road trip we head to the great city of…drum roll please…Johns Creek, GA! Johns Creek is one of the many homes to the Uniting for Change Advocacy Group! Uniting for Change is run by self-advocates who teach and grow self-advocacy through workshops, gatherings, writing letters to government officials, and so much more! They are networking in several cities across metro Atlanta, north, middle, AND south GA! WOW! This road trip has shown us so much about the work GCDD is doing all across the state! And we aren’t done yet! See you next week in Lawrenceville!

G for Georgia: Kennesaw
Welcome BACK to our virtual road tour! I’m your tour guide Justin, and today we are in Kennesaw, home to Kennesaw State University AND the oldest and largest IPSE program in Georgia! KSU offers TWO two-year certificate programs for people with intellectual disabilities. The base program helps students gain real-life college experiences through an inclusive environment, fostering social growth and development. The advanced program builds upon it by providing tools for career development, leadership and independence! Come along with us as we explore more I/DD representation across Georgia! Nandi Isaac is a disability advocate, Special Olympian and entrepreneur. Isaac's business Scan with Nan started with her membership in a camera club. With the help of her parents, she turned that hobby into a business. She’s been successful at restoring and digitally archiving customers' memories and important documents. U-TURN! 🚗💨 Back in January, we visited the great city of Athens, GA! 📍 We learned Athens is the home to the Advancing Employment initiative. This initiative, funded by GCDD, raises awareness, creates connections, and educates on employment opportunities for people with disabilities. We also learned, Athens is home to University of Georgia, or UGA. Home of the 2023 Orange Bowl Champs….and Destination Dawgs - one of the NINE college programs for students with disabilities in the state! Go Dawgs! Join us next week when we head continue our road trip across GA to learn more about what work GCDD is accomplishing across the state! 🗺️

It is the home of Council Member Dorothy Harris and home of Marian Jackson who is a self-advocate and Uniting for Change member. 📍 Marian Jackson has helped advocate for many groundbreaking movements for the I/DD community across the state. She helped to advocate for the closing of the institutions in Georgia and she is proud to be a part of Uniting For Change. She has been a part of this leadership collective since the beginning, helping create the group’s mission, vision, and guiding principles! Dorothy Harris who is an accomplished self-advocate and is on The Council for GCDD. More to come for Dorothy in a special video for her! Hello, Georgia! It’s me again, Justin, your tour guide! Our next stop on our virtual road trip we head to the great county of…drum roll please…Coffee County! 🚗 Their Coffee Regional Medical Center is in partnership with Project Search! Project SEARCH is a job training program for students with disabilities ages 18-22. This is unique in that it is a business-led, high school-to-work transition program, serving students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). It takes place entirely at the workplace and the goal for each student participant is competitive employment. This means employment in an integrated setting, working alongside coworkers with and without disabilities, year-round work that is not seasonal employment, 16 hours/week or more and minimum wage or higher. The success of the nine Georgia sites in securing such employment for their interns resulted in their recognition as 100% placement sites! Woah! 🌟 Also, Coffee County is home to the Taste of Douglas Food Festival. Yummy! 🍦 Join us next week when we stay roaming in south GA, to Fitzgerald, to learn more about what work GCDD is accomplishing there! 📍

My name is Justin and I am your tour guide for our virtual road trip across GA! 🚗 Last week, we visited Tifton GA and learned about organizations like Uniting for Change and Diversified Enterprises. This week we are visiting the City of Macon! Macon is the home of Macon Treasure Maps Road Show and is the home of Council Member Nandi Isaac - wow!! Hey Nandi! First coming to Macon in 2021, Treasure Maps Road Show is a series of drive-in performances held in six target cities across Georgia and showcasing the story performances of 10 people from across the state with developmental disabilities. Being responsive to the social activities and safety of the general public, this project aims to engage with people in an interactive and in-person way while upholding standard social distancing practices! 🎥 Nandi Isaac is a disability advocate, Special Olympian and entrepreneur. This week, we are making our way to the middle of state and visiting Tifton, GA! 🗺️ Tifton is home to the Home of Diversified Enterprises, self advocate work, and Uniting for Change Network meeting! Diversified Enterprises is committed to providing innovative and person-centered services for individuals with disabilities. They strive to provide opportunities to make contributions while establishing and maintaining relationships with the people in their community! Uniting for Change is another cool organization that is a statewide, grassroots network of self-advocates, allies, and supporters in Georgia that was founded in 2019. Members seek to share information, create opportunities and influence change! As if this wasn’t cool enough, Tifton is also the “Reading Capital of the World” and has been since 2000! Bookworms unite! Join us next week when we head to the city of Macon, to learn more about what work GCDD is accomplishing there! 📍
