June is Men's Health Month! Here are a few tips for men to help keep those ears as healthy as possible.
๐๐Protect Your Ears from Loud Noises:
Use Ear Protection: When exposed to loud environments, such as concerts, sports events, or while using power tools, wear earplugs or noise-canceling earmuffs to reduce noise exposure.
Limit Exposure: Avoid prolonged exposure to loud sounds. Take breaks from noisy environments and reduce the volume when using headphones.
Maintain Ear Hygiene:
Clean Your Ears Safely: Avoid using cotton swabs or inserting objects into your ear canal. Instead, use a damp cloth to clean the outer ear and let earwax exit the ear naturally.
Address Ear Infections Promptly: If you experience pain, discharge, or hearing loss, consult a healthcare professional to treat any potential infections or issues.
Regular Hearing Check-ups:
Schedule Hearing Tests: Have your hearing checked regularly, especially if you are over 50 or work in a noisy environment. Early detection of hearing loss can help manage and mitigate its impact.
Monitor Changes: Pay attention to any changes in your hearing, such as difficulty understanding conversations or needing to increase the volume on devices, and seek professional advice if needed.
Healthy Lifestyle Choices:
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity improves blood circulation, which is beneficial for the health of your ears.
Maintain a Balanced Diet: Eat a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those that support ear health, such as vitamins A, C, E, and magnesium. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, which can negatively affect hearing.
Avoid Ototoxic Medications:
Be Informed About Medications: Some medications, including certain antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs, can be harmful to your hearing. Discuss any potential risks with your doctor, especially if you have a family history of hearing loss.
Use Medications Responsibly: Follow the prescribed dosage and instructions carefully. If you experience any hearing issues while on medication, report them to your healthcare provider immediately.
By following these tips, men can take proactive steps to preserve their hearing and overall ear health.

Today is Day 4 of National PHAW. Today's theme: New Tools and Innovation ๐ฅฐ
The American Public Health Association states, "Public health is all about preventing disease, diagnosing health conditions, and encouraging health and well-being".
Achieving these goals requires advancements in technology, tools, and processes. Some examples include the use of wearables to track health goals, telehealth applications, pharmacological vending machines, test kits, and mobile health delivery options.
Call to Action๐ฃ
In 2021, funds were raised to build the first tiny house hearing clinic on wheels using my revamped graduate school business plan, a vision, prayer, and a lot of faith.
Friends and family embraced the mission and helped me raise the funds to build the unit. The unit was built with accessibility in mind and was equipped so that no one, regardless of their degree of ability would be left behind.
In 2022, we launched and put the unit into action and are still going! With partnerships with various agencies such as cyber academies, Head Start centers, senior communities, and early intervention agencies, we have been able to help thousands access quality hearing health care. This has not been an inexpensive feat.
The tiny house clinic will be transitioning into a non-profit model (Tiny House Hearing, Inc.) to open up opportunities for securing additional funding, expanding services, and reaching more people in need.
I am calling for advisory board members to build a team with diverse skills and expertise. I am specifically looking for individuals experienced in fundraising, accounting/finance, marketing, social media, and community outreach as this will undoubtedly strengthen the organization's capacity to achieve its goals.
There will also be the opportunity to support financially if you so desire.
Stay tuned for more information soon.
Though my vision has moved swiftly, it can go further, with you!

๐For Autism Awareness Month, please join me in supporting efforts to ensure that legislation established to support research, programs and services for individuals with autism do not expireโฐ๐๏ธ.
The Autism CARES Act is the only federal legislation solely dedicated to improving the lives of people with autism.
Important parts of this law are set to expire on September 30, 2024, unless Congress acts quickly to pass the Autism CARES Act of 2024.
This Act holds the key to $2 billion for various programs, including:
Developing personalized treatments and services through research;
Training future healthcare professionals to ensure quality care;
Supporting pediatric training programs focused on developmental and behavioral challenges;
Translating research into clinical practice and valuable resources or toolkits for families;
Sustaining numerous other initiatives designed to meet the diverse needs of people with autism across all ages.

For Day 2 for Public Health Awareness Week the theme is โCreating Healthier Neighborhoodsโ.
According to the American Public Health Association, โwhere we live, eat, play and sleep impacts our healthโ.
We all can play an active role in creating a healthier environment for all.
As an audiologist who has hearing loss but identifies more as a hearing person, as one who has partnerships with multiple state, community and international agencies that provide mobile and virtual hearing services to individuals, I am always challenging myself to think about what we can do better, then implement those strategies.
๐ Here are 6 ways to create healthier neighborhoods for people with hearing loss:
1. Establish quiet zones, 2. Utilize assistive listening technology, 3. Provide education on effective communication strategies, 4. Ensure accessibility in social events, 5. Strengthen partnerships for awareness, and 6. Expand broadband access.
There are many more ways. Please share how you think we can create healthier environments for people with hearing loss.
Let's build a more inclusive world together!
Happy Public Health Awareness Week!
Today's theme is civic engagement, which is crucial in promoting a healthier community for all.
As an audiologist, I understand the importance of actively participating in the decisions and actions that affect public health.
I am learning more about the interconnectedness of public health and audiology as I have become more involved with mobilizing services to vulnerable populations and regions.
Let's work together to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.
Here are 5 ways that audiologists can participate in civic engagement.
