Did you know… From its origins as Civil War era farmland, to a community of grand Victorian estates, to Atlanta’s first suburban shopping district, the Little Five Points Cultural District has undergone many remarkable transformations. The arrival of the Georgia Power trolley car in the late 1800’s in Atlanta resulted in suburban neighborhoods including Inman and Candler Park. Tired of commuting downtown, residents began opening shops in between the two neighborhoods on Moreland and Euclid Avenues. By the early 1920’s and through the Great Depression, Little Five attracted many thriving businesses including movie theaters, grocery and drug stores, barbershops, and restaurants. White Flight in the 50’s and 60’s hit Little 5 Points hard, and the community began to suffer from severe urban decay. With a proposed highway coming through, the local citizens—supported by the new hippie residents who arrived after getting priced out of 10th and Peachtree—decided they’d had enough. In the early 1970’s they formed coalitions, acquired funding, organized demonstrations, and united for a common cause: to take the neighborhood back. Soon the City of Atlanta began to award Little 5 community grants and funds for public improvements, and by the 1990’s Little 5 Points was booming. The entrepreneurial spirit of community-based businesses helped spur the revitalization of Little 5 Points, which today is an avant-garde arts & shopping district home to a wide variety of shops, restaurants, bars, services, live music venues and performing arts theaters.
