It’s officially fall, y’all! To celebrate, here are a few less-trafficked parks in our neighborhoods where you can soak up the cool air and fall colors. We all love Piedmont, but sometimes you need a little serenity! 🧘🏽♂️🍂
O4W- You’ve probably driven by the Carter Library or visited the farmers market, but did you know it sits on 30 acres of public greenspace with 2 lakes?
Midtown- On the NW end of Piedmont Park is the beautiful Winn Park, a more peaceful alternative to its larger cousin.
VAHI/Morningside- A short drive from VAHI in the heart of Morningside is the Nature Preserve, whose trails and beaches are a favorite among dog owners.
East ATL- Explore the trails and community gardens of Kirkwood Urban Forest, a city initiative to restore the area’s natural canopy.
Decatur- Venture up to Emory’s campus in North Decatur for miles of scenic waterside trails.
What’s your favorite local park?
It’s with one of our most iconic properties, the Mattress Factory Lofts! Built in the early 1900s, this factpry complex was originally the Southern Cross Bedding Company and is said to be the place where MLK Jr. had his first ever job.
Braden Fellman bought the then-abandoned buildings in 1998, and leasing began in 2001. Today the complex contains 218 unique loft-style apartments and is a familiar landmark to anyone frequenting the Grant Park area.
Swipe to see a few before and afters from when we first purchased the property to now!
We are ecstatic to hear that new plans for Atlanta’s Civic Center will include preservation and reuse of its existing structure thanks to ! This ATL landmark opened in 1968 and was a premiere arts and events venue for many decades, hosting the Opera, Broadway productions, Olympics events, and other cultural affairs until its official closure in 2014.
A host of proposals have come and gone since 2008 for the sites redevelopment, most calling for demolition. With impending redevelopment and reuse projects on the horizon in the area (including our Revival Lofts), it seems the time may have come for the Civic Center to see new life! We can’t wait to see how the plans evolve. Adaptive reuse is a development choice that benefits the environment, the community, historical record and our city as a whole.

In honor of being named to the National Register of Historic Places, let's take a little walk down memory lane with this Downtown gem!
Located at 159 Ralph McGill Boulevard (once Forrest Avenue), this 6-story 60's brick-style office building and chapel were originally constructed as the headquarters of the North Georgia Methodist Church Conference. The buildings were designed by FABRAP, a renowned Atlanta architectural firm who designed a host of buildings for the city including the original Fulton County Stadium, the Southern Bell Telephone Building, and the Richard Russell Federal Building.
Construction began in 1965 and would have completed in 1966, but the original design for the chapel failed when the curved roof collapsed as it neared completion. The design was altered to the angled shape we see today and the church's opening was held in January 1967.
The United Methodist Center relocated to Chamblee in 1999, and the building has been largely vacant since. Braden Fellman purchased the building in 2020 and will repurpose it into apartments debuting November 2021. We are so excited to revitalize this forgotten corner of the SoNo neighborhood and show off all the amazing historical details we were able to preserve in the new design! Stay tuned.
(Thanks to WLA Studio for the research behind this designation!)
